Almafi Coast Italy vs Athens, Greece

Wife and I are kicking around the idea of going to Europe again before kids start getting into the picture (not expecting or trying btw). Narrowed down to two finalists: The Almafi Coast in Italy (likely Positano more specifically) or Athens, Greece.

About 2 years ago we went on a Eurotrip that included a stay in Rome, which we absolutely loved. Id go back to Rome in a heartbeat but we like the idea of trying a different part of Italy too. Athens is up there for a lot of the same reasons: cultural history, beautiful landscape and beaches, weather, etc. Im a slight lean to going back to Italy, if for no other reason than the fucking food (insane how good it was in Rome).

Anyone been to either city? Tips/advice?

From what I've read the historic sites are great but once you get away from that it's a real shithole. Throw in the economic upheavals and it may not be worth the trip.

But again, take that with a whole shaker of salt.

Just booked the flights to Italy for the end of May, going with my brother and wife so despite already seeing Rome we're gonna make a short stop there for him to see.

Peay was right, Athens is a shithole. The islands are awesome but Athens is always on people's most disappointing cities. Trip seems awesome. I assume you used miles on it?

On the flights, yes. Havent really looked a ton into the hotel rewards much so just going with Airbnb

I have my trips all planned out for next year prob.

Want to head to Malaysia and Laos in February, then France in June (have tickets to the opening match of the Euros), finally in October go to London for a day and then onto either Ireland or Scotland to check it out.
