Texas reported its 3rd straight day of record COVID-19 hospitalizations (2,153 on Wednesday) — it was one of the first states to reopen.
Florida had the biggest jump in cases since March, and South Carolina hit a record high. California said nine counties saw a spike in new cases and hospitalizations

Texas as of today :
Texas has about 6,663 ICU beds. We estimate that 42% (2,798) are currently occupied by non-COVID patients. Of the remaining 3,865 ICU beds, we estimate 662 are occupied by COVID cases, or 17% of available beds.

Seems way high, but hopefully true. The higher the better in reality.

Not saying it's BS, but 8.7m is a helluva number to throw out there. We have 2.5m in the US right now, 9.4m globally. If it was 8.7m at the end of March when we were locked down, then what does that extrapolate to even with a diminished doubling effect, since many states started "reopening" things in early May? If they were estimating 9% at the end of March, we were in high control through April, then high-mid control through May, and now in June, we're in what I'd call basic control... That's a fairly long period. We'd have to be over 50% now, right? Maybe I'm completely missing something. Going on 4hrs of sleep and running on roughly 400 net calories today.

Just looked through the IHME site, which I haven't been on much the last few weeks...

They really aren't firm on projecting anything major in the future. They have their fat nationwide variance window in Oct, but I think that's out there due to being so unsure on what happens with schools.

Right now, they are saying that the country is at an estimated -24% mobility. Meanwhile, Ohio is around -15% and we haven't seen the -24% number here since our stay-at-home order got some other bizarre name around May 21st and most Ohioans took that as an opportunity to party. The IHME state level projections don't show much of anything in our future.

I know IHME's history on this hasn't been great, but looking at the data certainly isn't alarming right now. We went from 4k tests per day in Ohio to over 10k. Our daily deaths were over 44, now they are under 19, with a peak Oct 1 outlook of 15. Confirmed infections have been relatively flat (about 400-500 per day, a little lower lately), while testing as went from 4k per day to over 10k. Daily estimated infections were around 5k, now they are around 1.7k, with the high side estimate through Oct 1 not going over 1.5k.

You guys broke the record for covid cases in a day with 38 000+. Good job!

From @DKthomp

The most important COVID story right now is the age shift.

In Texas: Young adults driving the spike.
texastribune.org/2020/06/16/tex…

In Arizona: COVID cases growing 2X faster among ages 20-44 than 65+.

In Florida: Median age of new COVID cases fell from 65 in March to 35 this week —>

Can you guys figure it out? A city with 6 mil ppl have 200 new cases a day. You guys are brutal at not getting sick.

Also let’s not forget that like 99% of the population already had it and just never went to get diagnosed right?

So, I live in Texas (west Houston to be exact) and will be traveling to Northern New York state next week (I hear the NY and TX are 1 and 2 for new cases now). Rumor has it there is a 2 week quarantine period for all traveling guest to the state of New York...

Do I need to be worried as I am only schedule to be there for 5 days (visiting friends...flying into Albany). Can they for real keep me there for 2 weeks?? I'm a teacher and my wife is working remotely so I really don't care...but can they actually do that?

Thoughts, tips, info??

Course they can.

Whether they can enforce it is different.

Mandated Masks by the governor indoors at stores and where social distancing isn't always possible.

Went to the store today, majority not wearing masks...

The mentality is that this is all political is mind bottling. The mentality that government can say whatever they want, they can't enforce it is annoying. I'M FUCKING TIRED OF COVID FUCKING 19 AND THE MANY EXPERTS THAT KNOW NOTHING ABOUT DISEASE, TRANSMISSION OF DISEASE AND THE FACT THAT THERE ISN'T A VACCINE FOR THIS SHIT.

The whole world doesn't shut down because of a "fake" virus. I'm tired of not being able to trust a news report and then have it reversed, debated and rehashed until you don't know if it was real or fake. Or if maybe it's part real, with embellished fake. Rant over, mindless COD coming up next for 3 hours...

I think the problem is that this wasn't treated fairly among small businesses and large businesses. Small business were forced to shut down while Lowe's, Home Depot, fast food, etc thrived during this time. So, from all the small business owners I know are over this and just want to get back to normal, and not the "new normal"..virus be damned.

I won't shop at a store if I'm forced to wear a mask, it's my choice to spend my limited dollars where I want. But this damn virus has become so political it's unreal.

A new flu virus similar to H1N1 in 2009 has been identified in China. It emerged recently and is carried by pigs, but can infect humans.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/health-53218704

The virus, which the researchers call G4 EA H1N1, can grow and multiply in the cells that line the human airways. They found evidence of recent infection starting in people who worked in abattoirs and the swine industry in China.

Current flu vaccines do not appear to protect against it, although they could be adapted to do so if needed.

Prof Kin-Chow Chang, who works at Nottingham University in the UK, told the BBC: "Right now we are distracted with coronavirus and rightly so. But we must not lose sight of potentially dangerous new viruses."
