I never gave it any thought, but I always just assumed those simulators were based on the speed, angle, ball spin(if that's even possible) of the way the ball hits the screen that determines how well you hit it. Optishot reads the club at the point of impact (real or simulated). You can actually do Optishot without using a ball, but it's not really recommended. Doing so can get you into a bad habit of not hitting down on the ball.
