Dave, to me it sounds like you aren't bringing your wrists around at the point of impact with your driver. When you swing easy, you are bringing them through, causing the hook. I corrected my slice by making it a habit to "snap" my wrists around at the point of impact to make sure I'm not leaving the face of the club wide open. I started doing this with my long irons as well, along with flattening out my backswing, and I'm hitting my fairway woods and 3-5 irons straighter than ever.

Went out this morning. Solid round of hitting for me and my driver was on point, but my putting definitely did me in. Had a stretch of four straight GIR only to 3-putt. I early in the morning and there was a thick dew on the greens. My approaches left me with a lot of 20-40 foot putts, and I could judge the speed to save my life. I also missed just about every 4-6 footer I had, ugh. Happy with it otherwise, as I had two chunked shots as well (one on a par 3 water hazard costing a penalty) and still a descent score for me

If you look at the scorecard, the app gives you a standard and net score based on handicap. The black dots indicate how many strokes youre getting on that particular hole. Without ever calculating my handicap Ive been using an 18 for myself

Very good string of drives on 14, 15, and 16. Accurate and good distance.

One question for you: all three of those holes you hit a great drive and had under 100 yards after your tee shot -- is there very little risk to hit driver on those holes? I always think risk reward on short Par 4s and if it is under 350 yards for the hole I'm rarely hitting driver. Plus, I tend to dislike weird, in-between wedge shots and would prefer to leave myself a full PW or short iron to the green. But, I can see your wedge shots were good (just the putting was tough in the morning conditions like you mentioned), so probably not a concern for you.

Thanks! Its funny, if you asked me without looking I would have said my drive on 11 went just as far as those others from a feel/visual standpoint. Its interesting to go back and see just how much shorter it was, particularly because youre teeing from an elevated box on that hole

To your question: theres a descent amount of risk on those holes. 14 has water left but fairly open right, 15 has a pretty narrow landing area lined with trees as does 16, although on the left of 15 and 16 (they run side by side in opposite directions) you could punch out from the trees if needed. The problem, or situation Id say, is I dont have any long woods/irons that Im great at hitting. I have a 3 wood that still needs work, as I just cant find any consistent contact with it. Also a 3 hybrid which I hit descent, but not nearly as well as my driver. The next club in the bag is a 5 iron, as the shafts on my 3 and 4 irons have broke on tree trunks over the years.

So I really dont have a 190-225 club that Im really comfortable with. Couple that with me hitting my driver so well as of late, I tend to just go with that. Im with you on the weird distances though. If I could dial in a little better on that 90-110 yd approach shot I could really improve my score.

Another note, Im hitting my driver at straight as I ever have after really struggling with slices earlier this season. I didnt change my stroke at all, but my dad mentioned on a shot that he thought I looked stretched out a bit. Since then, Ive stood a little closer to the ball, kept everything else the same, and my fairways hit has gone from 10-20% for a few rounds there to 70+%

You guys are going to see some pretty amazing sights this week at the US Open. The weather is supposed to cooperate for most of the tournament, looks like Friday may be a possible wet day, hopefully not. They have been seeing pods of killer whales swimming by the course most of this month, I hope they are around this weekend. The traffic has been crazy already, glad I don't live in Tacoma, but it's almost my back yard.

Distance from the ball on address is probably one of those things that people pay the least attention to in alignment by may be more important than anything in terms of the shape of the shot (obviously where you aim is big too but shot shape and address distance are very, very linked).

I try to make sure that in my address stance that my hands on the grip are just hanging down below my shoulders or, at most, just slightly reaching out. If you're reaching way out just to have the club head behind the ball you're much more likely to "cast" out the club head to feel like your are insuring contact resulting in the cut across and the slice (like you were experiencing). I do tend to feel the shot better on the drive if I just have the smallest amount of reach (club head would rest maybe 1" from square behind the ball without the reach. For irons though, especially short ones, my hands are just hanging below my shoulders.

Hey man, Sea World hasn't taken a killer whale from its natural habitat in 35 years!!!

I know this because they're running ad campaigns and commercials all over here to let that be known.
