Re: Soccer discussion thread
That's decent business for Chelsea. Bought him back for less than they sold him for. He's not elite, but he's not terrible either. He's an upgrade. I think PSG jumped the gun here a bit because they weren't happy with his early performance.
While it's interesting to see Chelsea buy back a player... that's the 2nd most interesting move they've done today...
They put Juan Cuadrado on a 3 year loan to Juventus. 3 years... strange.

Re: Soccer discussion thread
Agree with the idea that they brought him back for less than they sold him on for, but that money is a little rich for my blood with him already being 29 years old. At the end of the day though he's a sturdy player and the going rate for defenders is getting pretty absurd so relatively fair market dealReignOnU wrote:That's decent business for Chelsea. David Luiz wanted to go back to Chelsea. he went to them today

With USA winning their group, and Mexico winning their group, it means that the two teams will face each other to open up the World Cup qualifying hex.
In Columbus.
On Veterans Day.
Daniel can attest to this....when we went in 2013, it was an absolutely insane atmosphere. If you live within a few hours of Columbus, I'd do whatever it takes to get tickets and be there. I cannot describe the crowd, the intensity, the passion that you will witness. It's a Friday night match as well, so it should be one hell of a party that night. Daniel and I will both be there. Dos a cero!

How does only the GK get a yellow card and not the player, who by the way, should be sending a thank you card to the GK for performing the miracle service:

Daniel and I will be in Columbus today for Dos A Cero, version 5. Anybody else attending the match? Also, any of the NDL Ohio boys care to join us? Even if you aren't attending the match, we will be tailgating at the stadium from 2-6 pm, swing by and have some food and drink!

Most likely, Arena.
I'll save my "wow" for when Gulati is gone.

If there was a young up and coming coach who was super interested, or some reputable international manager who wanted the job and would step in, I'd be all about it.
But in the middle of the Hex, with no better current option other than "well, so and so can step in and get us to the end of qualifying", I don't think the timing is good. I get that we don't play til March, but just plugging someone in as a fix isn't a good idea IMO. Should have just let him finish.
Hell, I hope I'm wrong and Arena or whomever charges them up and we qualify and do well, but I just don't like the timing. Merit or not.

Re: Soccer discussion thread
It's Arena. Good thing Pulisic, Gooch, Green etc are already cap-tied, or he'd be shipping them off on the first flight out. So much for our imported Americans strategy. That will be gone.

Except that Pulisic was born and raised in that well known foreign country of Hershey, PA.

Re: Soccer discussion thread
I don't know if Arena is that answer but he's not anti-dual nationals. He gave several foreign born players (David Regis, Pablo Mastroeni, Earnie Stewart, Carlos Llamosa) the vast majority of their caps in the past.
He did have a derogatory quote about dual nationals a few years ago but then clarified that he doesn't care if you're born in Germany or anywhere else, if you wear the USA jersey with pride and care when you lose then he doesn't mind. The thing he didn't like is if there are players that play for the US that are foreign born don't really care if they lose or not.

Re: Soccer discussion thread
Yea I forgot about that, someone else pointed that one out to me. Regardless, we're not going to get anywhere near the top if we just use home grown, home born players. It just isn't realistic. I'd love for that to be the case, but it isn't.LetsGoPeay wrote:Except that Pulisic was born and raised in that well known foreign country of Hershey, PA.
I hope you're right about his past comment, because though he likely backed off after some uproar, what he said was pretty cut and dry. Hopefully he back pedals and welcomes the Greens and Jones' with open arms.

Re: Soccer discussion thread
I guess the overall consensus was that there weren't any appealing young candidates to take the job and that under Arena there wouldn't be complete meltdowns like versus Costa Rica. I'm not very well in tune to the MLS, but two interesting names I saw for down the road were Oscar Pareja (Dallas) and Dominic Kinnear (Houston, now San Jose)
