i guess we can agree to disagree that he's setting them up for failure... i would need to hear your definition of why they'd be set up for failure? cause they don't become good pros? cause people don't like them? the only thing we know as of right now is he's helped put 3 kids thru college on a full ride and at least 1 will get a really nice payday. If they turn out to be Johnny Manziel's i'll certainly change my tone.

I don't think there is a right answer of how to raise kids. one thing i neglected to say is that i don't think he's anything like this when he's with his kids and off camera. some of the stuff he said was really intelligent and the thoughts he had were really objective/rationale/clear thoughts... obviously a ton of that gets lost in his hyperbole. i would guess he's much more reserved, i'm 99% certain he's encouraging and his kids seem like level headed, talented young kids. (well at least Lonzo from the things i've seen... the younger ones i have no idea).

i dont think its fair to say cause some parents are overbearing that being overly involved is bad. maybe their techniques weren't as good as this guys. this dude is clearly a master manipulator, he never leaves script and he follows the straight line sales method. Maybe other parents who try it fall off the tracks and push the kids the wrong way. I can't say i think its the right way or wrong way, i'm pretty certain i won't be anything like this guy.... but i'm also pretty certain i won't raise kids that will be in the NBA or become Tiger Woods either. i guess i don't think its fair to say he's doing something wrong because other people may not be able to raise their kids successfully using the same techniques. it seems to be working for him, kudos.

What I mean by the setting them up for failure is a couple of things. Again all of this is my view as a parent and a coach. 1) added spotlight/pressure. It's not needed IMO. Their play speaks loudly enough. Maybe they can handle it, maybe not. 2) First misstep they have on or off the court ( right or wrong) will be magnified because of daddy. I also think first sign of team struggle daddy will be vocal and a distraction. 3) To me this is more about him than his kids. He reminds me of the basketball dad from the documentary "Trophy Kids".

No right or wrong answer here, Aj laughs all the time about my kids and how I'm doing the travel ball and Rec league thing for my boys in baseball.

To be fair, anything good they do is also magnified. I'm guessing Ball likely gets the biggest shoe deal just because of his exposure.

this is where our opinions differ.

I think those people have mental issues, I think Ball is putting on an act as a business move and behind the scenes I think he's probably a pretty good father figure (in his own way). he's taking advantage of the game society has set up for him.

our culture eats up hate and pays the person being hated... we promote this type of behavior by focusing on polarizing personalities rather peoples actual contributions... think about Trump, Mayweather, honey boo boo, the Kardashians (to some extent), Kanye etc. being hated is like a sure fire way to a paycheck. obviously you need talent and those people are mostly in their positions because of some amazing skill but the hatred of them is a big part of what drives the amount of money they make.

the biggest problem I see, other than us being suckered into talking about him, is that if we continue to promote the marketing you're going to get even more dudes like that.

I agree with the idea of villains to create talk and promoting. All the people you named are promoting themselves that way. This is a father who is doing it not for his name but his kids name. Maybe they want it and this is their plan. Totally get what your saying and see your point.

Max actually made that point and it was something i was thinking.. guys like Ali, Mayweather, whoever that talked the shit had to go out and back it up. This is different cause the dad is doing it. I certainly see that argument as part of it. If the kid came out one day and was like 'dad, shut the fuck up, i dont want this attention' i'd 100% change my tune.

Do you think this 'act' by the dad will create animosity among the boys teammates? If it hasn't already it will when theses guys turn pro IMO

I have no idea... I don't really know anything about the kid. It's easy to assume the dad would cause tension but if he's a good kid his teammates might not care at all or might just laugh it off. I haven't heard anything about his teammates or coaches disliking him.

the one thing about him, he's a pass first type player. if a player helps his team on the court and gives effort, that's usually enough.

also, no way of knowing how he acts once his kid is in the league. he might sign that endorsement deal and then focus his energy on the younger kids 'making it' since the oldest already has his $. we'll find out soon enough I guess.

I also think his NBA personality will depend a lot on where he ends up. If hes somewhere like the Lakers without a veteran presence and without much stability it has more potential to get ugly, especially considering the dad is still close by. If he ended up in a place like Boston or a team already established I think he'd be put in his place real early, like most rookies are.

Possibly.

But they may also love him for the added exposure they're also indirectly getting.

I still think next year has the potential to be an absolute hell for Alford at UCLA. LiAngelo is a very average player and LaVar is still going to be over there on the sideline hyping him up. If he's not playing much or even "enough" by the dad's standards it could get very uncomfortable.

Man....what a game. No shame in losing to the best team in the country on essentially a buzzer-beater. UK and UNC played arguably the two best games of the entire season this year, both decided by one possession in the final 20 seconds.

I picked UNC to win the title in my bracket (had us losing here), and when we were down seven with a minute to go I had accepted the loss. To lose like that felt like a kick to the nuts while being punched in the throat hopefully that big Aussie bastard Humphries can carry that play over to next year.

I know nearly nothing about the intricacies of basketball other than the basics I learned playing in high school. What in particular makes it so bad?
