2 of the 3 died from high blood pressure pills

"There were no signs of violence, according to USA Today, and the Dominican Republic National Police announced an autopsy showed the couple died of respiratory failure and pulmonary edema. In the room, police also found medication for high blood pressure."

So both of them died according to the Dominican Republic, who have a vested interest to not want to cause fear and lose what I assume is one of their big revenue drivers in tourism dollars, from the same exact thing taking prescribed pills that they were already taking before vacation with no issues?

well Tourism is one of the things they have. but most ppl think DR isnt exactly the safest place to begin with no? dont think 3 deaths is gonna change that.

it absolutely changes things. both here and over there.

people who travel abroad regularly won't give a shit but the average American who already has anxiety about traveling to different countries would absolutely use this to add to their already paralyzing fears.

one of the reasons this doesn't happen more often is that those countries depend on tourism so much that even the criminals are self policing each other because they know if fears get out and the economy dumps that hurts everyone including the criminals. stories like this could literally cripple certain economies in smaller island type countries.

There may be large swaths of places that are unsafe within a country, but when you go on a vacation to a tourist type of resort, you're assuming you're pretty safe in that environment.

These folks aren't dying in some streets in bad sections of town.

Completely true. When I lived in the Caribbean the locals were very aware that tourism was the lifeblood. St Croix has one of the highest murder rates per capita in the world... or about double of Chicago. However other than random muggings on the board walk late at night, none of my friend experienced anything the 5 years I was there. It stays in its pockets. However, one instance stands out. A local touristy restaurant in the heart of downtown was robbed at gun point, including all the patrons at like 8pm on a Friday. The normally incompetent police force had arrested all 3 individuals responsible by Sunday. Rumor was the police force talked to the leaders of the local gangs who understood that this can't happen and they were ones who rooted them out in a day.

During the last three decades, the Dominican economy, formerly dependent on the export of agricultural commodities (mainly sugar, cocoa and coffee), has transitioned to a diversified mix of services, manufacturing, agriculture, mining, and trade. The service sector accounts for almost 60% of GDP; manufacturing, for 22%; tourism, telecommunications and finance are the main components of the service sector; however, none of them accounts for more than 10% of the whole.

they also have the 2nd largest gold mine in the world. tourism isnt the be-all end-all you guys seem to think it is.
