This is what is annoying to me... I shoot between 74-82ish usually, but I do it with freaking pars. I make 1 birdie/round, maybe 2. It's so damn annoying.dakshdar wrote:81 today (again). Start out 3 over through 2, then went 3 under through the next 5 to be even through 7. Then we hit the wall of people and started waiting on every shot. Killed my momentum. Finished with 4 birdies and 5 pars, but 13 over on the other 9 holes. I've got $175 gift card for lessons that my (now ex-)girlfriend gave me last Christmas. I think it is time to get them and see if that pushes me under 80.

Re: Golfers
Had the weirdest round I've ever had today. I really don't make many bad mistakes, but I also don't make a ton of birdies, and therefore just make a lot of pars an bogeys normally.
I only made 6 pars today and shot 78.
Was even par through 4 holes and didn't have a par (went birdie, bogey, double bogey, eagle). Ended up with 1 Double, 8 bogeys, 2 birdies, and an eagle. Went Driver-PW on a 503 yard par (368 drive slightly down hill with a dry course admittedly) and lipped out the eagle putt. Weird weird round but had a great time

Impressive.
Do you contribute any of your lacrosse success transitioning to golf or just how much you have caddied which helped you?
This is one sport I would love to be awesome at but would also be afraid to get so addicted to it.

Re: Golfers
Honestly, I think it's a combination of caddying and experience. I played a lot starting when I was in 7th grade, but never really practiced a lot or was able to take it seriously because of lacrosse (sport #1 obviously). I had some natural ability, but was not nearly as good as all of my friends on the middle school team.Cnasty wrote:Impressive.

I didn't play on the team in high school, but kept playing on the side. I was always around the game because of caddying, and I've seen so many people hit horrible shots, and so many hit great shots. I learned really young how to hit a lot of escape shots and recovery shots because I was... well... in a lot of trouble on the course. I'd develop little half punches and such to recover. I'd also see people do this at the course and just kind of developed my own way of doing it. That definitely saves me a lot of shots now. I say that I don't make a lot of doubles because I really don't. I cannot remember the last time I made worse than double, and I've only made a handful of doubles all year. I make sure to grind it out and save shots. This helps me keep the scores down without making a lot of birdies.
I started to get a "feel" for my game early in college. I could start to feel what a bad shot felt like, and know instantly what I did wrong ("oh I didn't clear my hips", or "oh I didn't get my hands through it"). I don't know exactly where that feeling came from, and damnit if it wouldn't have been nice to have it in high school haha. Once that feel took over, I could go and hit a half bucket of balls and figure out what I was doing wrong and I'd be good to go for another month or so until I got into some other bad habit.
I love golf. It's a great game, and you can play it until the day you die. I've seen a 72 year old man shoot his age before. With technology the way it is, you can keep your game going forever. If you got into the game, and worked at it a bit, I'm sure you'd enjoy it. Don't dive right into it buying a bunch of expensive clubs, and all that crap. Borrow a set from your Dad/brother/friend, go to the range a few times, and see what it's like. You'll probably suck right off the bat, so don't get discouraged, but if you can acquire a feel for it, there's always something you can work on. That's the best/worst of golf... no matter how good you get, you can always be better. I've found that the better you get, the more frustrating it becomes, but also more rewarding.
I just like the fact that I can go out with someone that beats me by 10 shots, or (like today) with someone that loses to me by 20, and still have a fun ass time. I've played at least 5 rounds this year by myself, just whipping around the course in a cart by myself playing 18 in 2 hours. There's so many different ways to enjoy the game.
Hopefully that actually answered your question lol. I feel like I got a little long winded. Hit me up on AIM if you'd like to chat more about it!

It sucks because Shel hates playing and he is the closest one around to actually get a round in with. Josh is actually solid but a little farther away.

Re: Golfers
Funny you say that.
I got invited to play with our COO and VP a couple times because I use to play with another manager in my office and he was actually ok.
Problem is they are actually really good and I am terrible. I dont need that pressure with 2 higher ups and embarass myself on the course.
Id rather take about 20 lessons and then take them up on their offer.
It sucks because we get a lot of vendors that play golf when they come into town since they normally come from colder states and such and I am just that bad I dont want to embarass the company.

You have to embrace your shittyness and just enjoy the day.

We need another Williston Invitational...in like November though. No way we can play with these 100+ degree days here.

Re: Golfers
Hands down, the hardest thing I've ever tried to learn. I shit you not... first round I played was 126. Shortly after, I finished with a 132. This was about 7 years ago, when I had just finished playing football and was just getting heavy into the tournament softball scene. Every year I've gotten just a little better. As I understand, the typical male, middle aged golfer shoots just around 105 and should be playing whites. 105 is a bad day on the course for me now. And I usually aim to stay under 100. I shot my best round ever about 6 weeks ago, a 90 at Tot Hill Farm from the blues. (Golf Digest's 7th hardest course in America) I did take some lessons about 3yrs ago, just 3 30min quick ones. My wife prepaid for 3 hour long lessons that are good through 2013 with the former club pro a decent course here. I figure with the kid on the way, it's time to ease up on the softball (cut back a ton already... not playing at all in the Fall) and start to focus on golf. With golf, when I've got an hour or so to kill, I can hit the range... if I've got a morning free, I can hit the course. No real time commitment required. My goal after I get the 3 lessons is to consistently hit in the low 90s and finally break into the 80s. I'm getting to that point of having a 'feel' and knowing what I'm doing wrong. I'll get stretches where I kind of lose it on the course and throw up an 8, but those are very rare now. Learning to hit solid half punches and controlling the distance between 70 - 150 or so yards is a huge help.

Re: Golfers
That took nearly 5yrs to get rid of. It didn't help that I was still playing throughout. A lot of it was (and still is) mental. I play golf with many of the guys I play softball with. I can absolutely mash a softball. I have a friend who is a pure line drive hitter and we get on the course and he is 280-300 down the middle, every single time. If I hit it 300, it's because it was down hill and down wind. I've learned to accept that I can hit it 260 and keep it on or near the fairway. Then another guy I normally golf with, who is also our clean up hitter, is another tough comparison. (he can't control his drive for shit, which helps, lol) But we can be a similar yardage, like 160 for instance, and I'm lining up a 7 iron. I'll look over and he'll have a damn 9 in his hands.Cnasty wrote:Yea I was thinking about getting a couple lessons on just the basics.

Don't let your ego get in the way, understand what works for you, find the tempo that gives you consistent swing results and master it. Once your consistent, I've found that you'll increase distance naturally as the muscle memory develops. I'm up about 10-15yds from where I started with most clubs, just from feeling comfortable and letting the swing develop. With these clubs, they do all of the work. You paid a good price for them, so get the most out of them.

Re: Golfers
Just got back from golfing 18, which is rare for me (usually I just walk 9, this morning I rode 18 with my dad). Golfed the best 9 of my life on the front, and followed up with a really solid back 9 by my standards and finished 40-43-83. Im usually high 40's low 50's, and before last week hadnt touched a 46 in a couple years (fucking med school messed with my shit big time!). Finally figured out a couple things with the irons, and steadied the driver a bit. Felt great out there despite it already being 93 degrees out there walking off 18 at 10:30 this morning
Damn, feels good to be enjoying golf again
