I'll say this. Calvin Johnson, Alexander Ovechkin, Lebron James, and Johnny Manziel. I make it a point to watch the game or the highlights of these guys every time they play, without exception.

Re: NFL Thread
I won't make it a point to watch whole games (Lebron, sometimes), but I definitely watch highlights of those guys. Jon Jones / Anderson Silva... that is appointment viewing for me.trendon wrote:I'll say this. Calvin Johnson, Alexander Ovechkin, Lebron James, and Johnny Manziel. Barry Sanders didn't produce 1500 yards a year with 10 TDs on 5 YPC for 10 solid seasons? LOLReignOnU wrote:Yeah... Emmitt Smith was a better RB than Barry Sanders too.
That was just a woeful analogy, just awful.
Next thing you know, we're gonna have to start calling guys who never played a down in the NFL the best ever because they could have been really good before that injury!!!

Calvin Johnson isn't producing 82 catches, 1332 yds and 9.4 TDs a year, during his 6.5 year career... including only starting 10 games his rookie year? Oh wait.. he is.

He had the talent to be top 10, hell the best, but you can't be there if you don't produce, you just can't.
Where do you draw the line on this? What if Bo played 3 years instead of 4? How bout 1 year? Does he have to play at all to be top 10 ever, where's the line?

I am in a keeper hockey league and I got Ovechkin and Stamkos because my friends stupid and dealt me Ovi last yr lol. Nothing like watching their stat sheets fill up.trendon wrote:Uh, yeah. And I'd argue that Emmitt isn't. I never thought he was the best in the league... ever. He had a fairly healthy career and milked it for as long as he could. It certainly helped to be surrounded with those offensive weapons and that OL.

And Jerry Rice didn't average 75 catches/1296 yards and 13 TDs per year either right?ReignOnU wrote:shel311 wrote:Barry Sanders didn't produce 1500 yards a year with 10 TDs on 5 YPC for 10 solid seasons? LOLReignOnU wrote:Yeah... Emmitt Smith was a better RB than Barry Sanders too.

Like I said, the Barry Sanders comment was awful, terrible comparison as Barry's numbers were actually much more impressive than Emmitt's. You gave me Calvin Johnson's numbers, which are about the same as Rice's. ANd that doesn't factor Rice's 4 games missed due to strike which would bolster his numbers even more considering he scored 22 TDs in 12 games that year.

Bo Jackson is special, though, because he is Bo. I still have never heard other athletes - who all have huge egos - talk about another player like they did talk about Bo. And then you find out the truth is even crazier than the story.ajalves wrote:Bo Jackson is arguably a top 10 all time RBshel311 wrote:Barry Sanders didn't produce 1500 yards a year with 10 TDs on 5 YPC for 10 solid seasons? Those 2 guys are in a league of their own in that regard, no doubt.

Re: NFL Thread
It was far from awful... it pointed out the fact that stat accumulation doesn't make you the best. It's not the same in terms of ability, as Sanders is an extreme case, but it proves my point. A similar argument also applies to this... Rice benefited greatly from the weapons around him. Teams could lineup to take him away, because he had Taylor, a capable TE (Jones), a dual threat RB (Craig) and an elite OL +FB (Rathman) that allowed for the offense to be much more lethal. Teams try to take away Johnson and the only real thing that he has going for him is that Stafford is so damn stubborn that he keeps trying to throw him the ball.shel311 wrote:And Jerry Rice didn't average 75 catches/1296 yards and 13 TDs per year either right?ReignOnU wrote:shel311 wrote:Barry Sanders didn't produce 1500 yards a year with 10 TDs on 5 YPC for 10 solid seasons? Bo Jackson was nearly a 30-30 hitter twice and had four runs of 85 yards or more ... at the same fucking time. I am hard-pressed to put anyone near him as far as lore.

Re: NFL Thread
It was awful because nowhere in my Calvin Johnson-Jerry Rice comments did I talk about stats "accumulation".ReignOnU wrote:It was far from awful... it pointed out the fact that stat accumulation doesn't make you the best
You used Barry Sanders who put up for 10 straight years, numbers that were better than Emmitt. Hell, Barry averaged 1500 yards/10 TDs/5YPC, again averaged over 10 years. Smith never did that in 1 season, much less average. That's how far the 2 are apart.
Calvin Johnson and Jerry Rice are extremely comparable. So given 2 like players, why in the world would you choose the one who did it at a high level for 6.5 years over the guy who did it at the same level for probably twice that, give or take?
Let him produce and put up the numbers that are better than Rice for a long period of time, then we'll call him the GOAT, that certainly seems fair enough.
