Peay, whats the outsiders view of Zook? while I was in school, Illinois managed to go to 1 (bcs) bowl game (fuck you Shel), and then won 7 total games over 4 years. There where many games where I didnt stop tailgaiting because I knew we had no chance. It seems like Illinois is back to being competitive. Obviously, Zook has peaked, but is he viewed as a total failure, or will he get credit for improving Illlinois?
I know most of the Indiana fan base views him as kind of bumbling CEO. His subordinates are the ones that deserve most of the credit and yet he finds ways to screw things up for them with his stupidity at times, like when he went for two this year at IU and later said in an interview it was "because he didn't know the score". Mike Locksley gets much of the credit for recruiting the talent for the Rose Bowl team even though he was a complete disaster at UNM. Paul Petrino should get credit for getting Illinois turned around last year. When it's all said and done I really believe "The Zooker" is an appropriate nickname for him. He's a good guy but really he's just a bumbling goofball.

Ohhhhhhhh.
I didn't even correlate the BCS bown with LSU lol. Now it all makes sense why I got the preemptive F you. Well played.
That was 2002? Back in the Rohan Davey to Josh Reed days.
47-24 was the final?
I'll find out how good my memory is lol.

Just a few points of clarification...
LetsGoPeay wrote:

Only 2 of Locksleys commits ended up starting/playing significatly in that Rose Bowl season (Benn/Vontea). 13 of his targets never made it on campus or where kicked out of school in the first 2 years.

Illinois is averaging 11.8 points per game in the last 5 games. Most Illini fans are not sure about Petrino and think he has been exposed. The defense is really what turned around Illinois last year and this year and rank in the top 3 in the Big Ten in almost every chategory. Koennen is in charge of the defense.

You are right. He is a likeable guy but I fear he has been exposed as a below average coach who makes way too many mistakes. Problem for Illinois is, what do we do next? No offense but I really dont want to end up with a guy like Wilson. I am suprised at how terrible he has been and he has done a terrible job handling the media and his own team.

I'm fine with everything Wilson's done. IU football had to have nothing less than a complete and viciously dramatic change in culture to shake it out of it's historical shittiness. This had to happen if IU ever wanted to be anything more than the ass-end of the Big Ten with a bowl game every 18 years or so. If the older guys didn't buy in and had to be removed, so be it. IU was incredibly soft with Bill Lynch as the coach and it showed with how often the team got outplayed in the fourth quarter and second half of games. The biggest problem I can see with Wilson is that he has to be able to survive what he's created. This isn't a quick fix program. It's going to be a long hard process and I don't expect it to pay dividends in the win-loss column for at least another two years. I expect some progress next year with maybe 3-4 wins. But when this group of freshmen is juniors they need to be contending for a bowl game. Fortunately, Wilson seems to have the complete support of the administration. IU's AD, Fred Glass, is dedicated to bringing the football program up to respectability and from all his comments and statements, it's obvious that he's fully bought into what's going to be a difficult process.

Remember when Texas v. Texas A&M was a contest with a lot on the line?

A&M is the biggest under achieving program in college football. Top 10 preseason 6-6 final record. With their location and money/fan base there's no reason they shouldn't compete for a NC every 5 years or so. Here's to them getting raped in the SEC from now on. Last night was one of the first times in years i've openly rooted for Texas.

It's just not the same without Nebraska and Oklahoma playing after Thanksgiving. I miss those HUGE games, although I am glad we are playing Iowa over any other team though.

Tulsa was still in the Missouri Valley Conference for basketball when I was at Indiana State and I've always said that they had by far the ugliest cheerleaders I saw in my college career. Uglier even than Morehead State, Eastern Kentucky, or Northern Iowa and that's saying something.
