Figured it out.
You have to go to the console menu, go in to ACCOUNT MANAGEMENT and then REDEEM CODES and put it in there or you can do it through the PSN store as well.

it was saying my code was invalid and i couldn't find a place to enter it after it said that.
so i quit the game, went to the playstation store, entered the code there, downloaded it and now i can get online no problem
my pre-order code won't take though so right now i can't use my favorite ex-Bronco Timmy Tebow

Ive played a couple online ranked games with my brothers copy and without using the online code...so what exactly is it needed for?

I wonder if it is bugged cuz it would normally prompt you for the code when you tried to get online.
