If 2k makes a college game, it still won't have real school names or logos. It just means that EA sports wouldn't be able to make one either, unless they made deals separately with every single school. Which would cost WAY too much.

I probably went through 6-8 ps2 controllers from throwing them. Ps2 ncaa was no joke with its greatness.

Why can't they both make one if they can't use real names/logos?

even if its gone we'll still have madden leagues and fifa leagues and others that will probably do a lot better without NCAA. As long as assholes like us are willing to spend $15 on it, they will release it.

I only dread if 2k makes it. They console lock gameshares to 24 hours per account on US systems, they leave European alone.

The article already stated that NCAA does not make deals for individual schools. It sounds like the schools already have to give the approval to be in the game.

And maybe EA and 2K can get a cheaper contract agreement from the NCAA to both make games again like it used to be instead of having an exclusive contract that kept the other company from being able to make one.

How would they get a cheaper contract if the NCAA is backing out due to rising costs of litigation?

2K3 was an awesome game. The graphics and gameplay were way ahead of EA.

Pretty sure the licensing is done thru the CLC and not the NCAA. This would just mean they couldn't put NCAA or any NCAA logos in the game. I could be wrong on this but I thought I read this a while back.

NCAA is backing out because of the O'Bannon suit, and the claim that despite EA only using numbers, that EA tried to make the players match their real life likeness means those players should be paid, and seems to be some kind of proof of the NCAA sending official rosters or something like that to EA to help them achieve that.

So, if from now on they decided to no longer make them similar to real players, just make the appearances at least be all random, they could get away with it with no threat of a lawsuit I believe. Does anyone remember an NCAA basketball game that game out for the Super Nintendo back in like 93? I remember getting it as a freshman and playing with UNC, they had Eric Montross as a black guy, so it would be stuff like that.

Now seeing word on twitter that just because the NCAA pulled support, the CLC, which handles the licensing for the schools, could still deal with EA if they wanted. Unless EA decides now is the time to just break off the whole thing.

Came into post the same article as it does feel like this year could very well be the end...

http://thenosebleeds.com/ncaa-will-not- ... ea-sports/

Here is my perspective on the conversation.

Point 1: Divorce between EA and NCAA is not exclusive to these two. It's less about Electronic Arts making a compelling product but more about the overall discussion of using "collegiate athlete's likeness" to make money. Whether it's 2k, Activision, Sony, whomever...It doesn't change the fact the NCAA is butthurt about all the heat they get for $$ they make off this game each year and how the athletes see none of it.

Point 2: This was a 2nd tier franchise for Electronic Arts. Meaning they make & spend their big bucks on 1st tier franchises (i.e. Madden, FIFA, NHL) while 2nd tier games are fed later. Which doesn't bode well during a platform transitions (i.e. Ps3 to Ps4) because its not as important to secure 2nd tier franchises right away. This rationale could lead to very well lead to the overall de-funding of this project. Just like College Basketball & Baseball games were phased out, this could very well be next in line.

From operationssports twitter - "Two ways this ends CFB from EA: 1)If EA wants it to. 2)If the CLC doesn't license to EA. So in that regard, nothing has changed today."

man the shitty part is were going to PS4 this yr, so even if they were no more and you could do roster updates, it would still be on the previous console no one is gonna play anymore. fuck

nobody else is going to get the license until the lawsuits are dropped or figured out

EA or whoever else would try to make a game could still make it but would have to use alternative names. state schools there would be no issue cause they can't prevent them from using names like Alabama or Florida but other schools would have to use city names. Boise would just be Boise instead of Boise St.

back in the day that was acceptable, i'm not so sure people would buy that now tho.

as for other leagues... the NDL hasn't been about NCAA in a long time. FIFA, NBA2k, COD, OOTP would carry us and maybe even grow the community since we'd be able to look past our NCAA roots.

This is only true is EA still thinks it's worth the cost of making it. Granted they obviously don't have any testers on payroll for making this game, but still it will probably be all about what the profit margin.

Just saw a link to the Precover v. Electronic Arts Inc case.

https://www.easportslitigation.com/Home/FAQ#3

In the settlement it states:

Additionally, the Settlement provides that Electronic Arts will not enter into an exclusive trademark license with the AFL for five years from the date of approval of the Settlement; and that Electronic Arts will not renew its current collegiate football trademark license with the Collegiate Licensing Company (“CLC”) on an exclusive basis for five years after it expires in 2014; and that Electronic Arts will not seek any new exclusive trademark license for the purpose of making football videogames with the CLC, the NCAA, or any NCAA member institution covered by the current exclusive license for five years after the expiration of the current CLC agreement.
_______________

So the door would be open for other companies to sign their own deals. However, I have a hard time seeing where the pie is big enough for more than one game. I doubt NCAA sells over 1mil copies and part of that profit is eaten by licensing deals. I guess they could cut costs but that means a worse product.....if that is possible. :P
