I just think it's funny how people can pick and choose what parts of the bible they agree with and don't, and then can agree on certain parts so vehemently, like being against this.
But then when it comes to pre marital sex or something that is against there religion, a lot of these same people that are so against gay marriage certainly weren't all about upholding the no premarital sex part of the bible.

Nick-Normal in the sense of how it is portrayed in society. When I think of a wedding I think of a religious ceremony. And, no, I am not married btw.
buckeye-I would like to ask the exact same question about children dying like that. Only answer I can give is that it must of been their time to go. As for gang bangers shooting the life out of eachother, a quote comes to mind: "I wanted to ask God why he allowed so much war and violence and poverty in the world, but I was afraid he would ask me the same thing." Free will comes into play there. As for the child though, i dont understand it, nor do I claim to understand it. My belief in God gets weaker when shit like that happens.
I do often start leaning towards the view of shel, the whole "if it doesnt affect me, why be against it?" My religion teacher is one of the smarter guys I know, and is one of those people who has an answer for everything. Tomorrow I will talk to him about this. I will ask him why, from a non-christian standpoint, gay marriage is wrong. I shall bring the information to everybody here when I get it from him.

That's a good idea.
But the only thing, not to speak for most of the really religious folks, but most of them that are dead set against it usually say it is because the it says in the bible about the whole gay thing.
But, like I said, then a lot of those same people turn around and do LOTS of stuff that the bible says you shouldn't do, like oh i dont know, NOT judging others.

I'll definitely make sure I get the answer from him in a non-Christian standpoint. Today we discussed the death penalty. He, of course, is against it while I am for it, though he put up some very good arguments for why it shouldnt be allowed. Still think it should be, but thats a topic for another day...

Thanks for the find Matt. Gave us something to discuss in my psych class this afternoon.
I think sometimes (not speaking in majority because I'm not trying to even slightly start an argument) it is seeing (some) things more in black and white as opposed to shades of gray. Based on personal beliefs, religion, lack of religion, personal experiences, or whatever.
Regardless, it is going to happen anyway...maybe not marriage in the near future, but at least the civil unions. I'm glad to see this happen though. For insurance and pension plans, it is so unfair that things are the way they are. Hell, it is dumb as hell that if you are gay/lesbian, you can't be by your partner's side if they are dying in the hospital. Just dumb...Vermont gets a pat on the back. Equality is equality.

People we need to get done with this asking God why bull of a question. Its free will people, this is why bad things happen because we have a choice and he does not force us to do anything. We can chose to even not believe in him at all. If he were to step in all the time and protect us from ourselves and each other then what real freedom would any of us have. I have my own long researched and though out views on homosexuals, if they want have partnerships and unions than so be it, but to classify marriage as something shared by 2 men or 2 women is.............................

ultimately between the 2 people and that doesn't affect your life in anyway so you shouldn't judge or worry about it???

I have a close friend who is very much a christian and lives by his christian values. He said that if it was a Civil Union he wouldnt have anything against it, but he's against calling it a marriage because to him marriage is defined by a man and woman married under god. So he's cool as long as its a civil union. Just amazes me a little that they are both the same thing but just different in the words is all.

I suppose we have different opinions of what affects us then. When a nation makes a move to not just allow but embrace this it does and will affect the coming generations. If you believe as I do that marriage is the union of a man and woman under God becoming one with the purpose of working together as a team to reach others for Him, and that we are now talking about calling two men or two woman who chose to live a life in direct conflict with the word of this God the same thing. You should be able to see why it is an issue to some. I don't hate them for it, I have nothing but love and very deep concern for there souls, but I will not support the promotion of this lifestyle any more than I would going against the 10 commandments.

Where does God say this is in direct conflict with his intentions for marriage?

I fully and 100% support Hoo's right to marry and have every civil liberty with the partner of his choosing as much as the rest of us.

But those two will never get married.
Have you SEEN the "lesbians" who want to get married? I want you to take the things you just imagined....and apply them to THESE couples (actual couples from AP photos from "wedding ceremonies"):
Still wanna see the homemade videos from these women sharing a double donger?

10/4 Dave!
ON a serious note though I want someone who is against Gay Marriage to come on this board and please in detail explain to me what IS SO WRONG about 2 guys/girls getting married....like really why should it be against the law?!?! Its absurd but I am willing to listen.........
IMO the only reason people are against it is because they do not want their kids having homo sexual thoughts at a young age which is rediculous......I am one of many believers that you are born gay and it can not be helped. Marriage makes many people happy and content in their lives why stop a certain person from being with someone that they love?

Nietzsche once said that Christianity could be a great idea if it weren't for all the Christians (paraphrase). Shell, the problem is that we ALL fall short of the perfection in God's eyes. Some fall a little further short than others and thus we get your observation above. I can't answer why some pick and choose other than they just don't 'get it.' I can only hold those people accountable to their actions. In my last church we had an elder that was cheating on his wife. The church applied biblical principles and booted him and the woman he cheated with. After 6 months of working with them, we reconciled both back into the congregation. The point here is this: As Christians we need to hate sin but still love the sinner. No one is beyond redemption.
I agree that each of us is given the choice to believe what we want. If the Lord wanted a bunch of zombies that blindly follow him than he would have never granted us free will. I believe in God and that Jesus died for my sins. I believe the Bible is very specific in how it wants me to live my life and I strive to make that happen. I am not perfect or better than anyone else. However as a believer I must be "All In" or "All Out", I can't pick and choose what I like about the Bible.
To the question at hand: God designed Man and Woman to be as one. 2 men or 2 women is not a union that will produce fruit, either physically or spiritually.
That said, I will not turn my back on people who make that choice because they may come to see the error of their way and need a path back. Jesus provides this example:
(Matthew 9:11-13)
But when the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with such scum?” When Jesus heard this, he said, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do.” Then he added, “Now go and learn the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’ For I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.”
As for the 'Civil Union' argument, that is a institution of man and as was said in the Bible, Give to Caesar that which is Caesar's

I would say thats true mainly because until recently voting was done primarily by a different generation...
