Didn't Ohio State win the B1G Conference game? With the same record you have to go with the championship game winner over someone that didn't play. Like Shel said, it's essentially a bye

That was their 6-7 year due to infractions. Can't remember who was left out and don't want to look up anything else now
The best example of this and what I mentioned was 2017.

Wisconsin was 12-0 and in the top 4. They lose to Ohio St in the Big 10 Title game. Bama who was 5th overtakes Wisky in the #4 spot to get to the playoffs.

I personally wouldn't have dropped 12-1 Wisky below 11-1 Bama because Bama had a bye and Wisconsin had to play a title game. That logic is so messed up.

What was the score of that Wisconsin game?

Final score was 27-21.

Was 24-21, OSU kicked a FG with 5 minutes left.

Wisconsin got as close as 1st and 10 at the Buckeye 43 with 1:28 left before a holding penalty and then an INT sealed it.

Couldn’t remember. I see that argument. One more game could mean a loss while someone sits at home but SOS throughout the year and how each team played in a loss should matter. CFB has gotten better but still nothing gonna make everyone happy.

nothing is going to make everyone happy is the same as 'do you really think they are better than XYZ' argument... while it may be mostly true, its not an acceptable response.

it doesn't need to be perfect, it just needs to be objective and have some set of criteria we go off of rather than some set of dudes opinion in a room who i can almost guarantee are catching kickbacks from boosters to sway a vote in their direction.

Agree, but there has to be some stipulations. Kind of like what Dave said, Power 5 conference champions get in, highest ranked non-power 5 champion gets in as well as 2 wild cards (no more than 2 teams representing a conference as well).

If it has to change, I like 6 so teams at the top can really have something to battle for or just be given a well deserved advantage with the top 2 teams getting a bye.

Then you have 1 wild card after the conference winners then?

I love this idea of 8 teams!
I hope it expands in the next few years.

let them play at home if you're a 1 or 2 seed (maybe) but not a fan of a a bye at all... simply because you're back to the subjectivity of who is 1 and 2

Home games for sure would be awesome.

But even with 8, there's always talk of 1 or 2 wildcards, so there will still be subjectivity, so I'd be ok with using that same logic for 1 and 2 and a bye.

But yea, home playoff games would be pretty darn epic.

sure there is always going to be subjectivity but you want to push it out to the periphery as far as possible when creating an objective system. you want to create a foundation that isn't even remotely debatable then you give yourself wiggle room around the edges.

if right now its:

SEC - LSU
PAC - Oregon
ACC - Clemson
Big 10 - Ohio St
Big 12 - OU
Non power 5 - Notre Dame
Wildcard - Alabama
Wildcard - Minnesota

the question would then be how are they seeded... is it by rankings (which would put Bama ahead of a conference winner). is it rotating where every year a different conference matchup is round 1. do you let the top seeds choose who they want to play from rest of the group?

lots of options

purely by rankings you'd have:

1) LSU vs 8) ND
4) Alabama vs 5) Oregon

2) Ohio St vs 7) OU
3) Clemson vs 6) Minnesota

obviously alot of that would change as last few weeks play out... but in this type of system i can't imagine any team having a realistic argument that they deserve to be involved being left out
i'd also probably have some sort of a undefeated team stipulation. like if you go 12-0 you're guaranteed a wild card. i know alot of people wouldn't like that (because a team from the MAC or some shit could do it) but i hate that a team can win every game and not have a chance

Notre Dame would not count as a non-power 5. They are always considered Power 5.

in this type of situation you'd have to include all independents as non-power 5 or they'd never have a shot

By definition, they'd be a non-Power 5. The Power 5 bids would be determined by winning their conference. ND is not in those conferences.

This is the system I proposed years ago. It's always made the most sense and it still does.

no you don't. I guarantee the group of 5 conference would revolt if notre dame was lumped with them.

everywhere that has talked about expanding to 8 says the top ranked 'group of 5' team gets in.
