Dave and Shel,

Give me your top 5 players of all time in order.

Here is my list.

1. Jordan
2. Chamberlain
2. Kareem
3. Magic
4. Oscar Robertson

I actually ran out of names after 3.

Edit: fixed my list

Jordan
Magic
Wilt
Robertson
Bird

Something like that. Ask me again tomorrow, and 4 and 5 probably change.

Im pretty clueless on NBA, having not watched more than 20 games since Jordan left Chicago. Here is something I wondered.

If LeBron has a Grant Hill type of career going forward, never able to play more than 15 games a year, does he make it into the Hall of Fame?

He should be first ballot imo.

9 years is a decent size career.

i'd rather not do a top 5. i don't think its fair to compare cross era's. you can't objectively compare a guy like Wilt playing against 6'7 guys everynight to a guy like Shaq who had 7 footers trying to kill him everynight.

here are my thoughts:

1) Jordan
2) Lebron

thru any era's.

after that i think there is a big group:

Bigs: Shaq, Wilt, David Robinson, Kareem, Russell, Olajuwon
Forwards: Duncan, Barkley, Malone, Dirk, Larry, Garnett, Dr J
Guards: CP3, Wade, Magic, Kobe, Oscar Robertson, West

kind of a pussy way out, but i don't think there is any fair way to compare everyone with rule changes and with the advancement in talent/athleticism.

3 is probably the most comfortable i'd be willing to go and that'd be Shaq.

I thought so as well but will defer to the stat boys for the following:

How many Mvps?
How many times did he lead the league in scoring?
All star selections every year I assume
First team how many times?

He is the best player of the era possibly so that holds something.

LeBron never needs to play another minute and he's a first ballot hall of famer by any objective measure.

I am not minimizing LeBron's accomplishments in any way, but I would think that if LeBron never won a championship (I think he will), then he would have to leapfrog Marino on the Dan Marino list (did that make sense?). Marino never played defense and was only half responsible for his team vs. LeBron who is on the floor 95% of the time.

Thats what I thought, plus, I didnt realize he was playing in his 9th year already.

Ok what about a comparison between Kobe and LeBron (if both stopped playing today). Which one would rank higher?

- Kobe - has the larger numbers due to a longer career and being on more talented championship teams.
- LeBron - more dominant in his all around game.

The amateur in me would say Kobe due to his higher scoring average and championships. But I am not sure that is the right answer.

i get the point you're trying to make. but he's not on the floor anywhere close to 95% of the time.

the way i look at sports is how much does that one player help the team reach the goal of winning. like a math problem... if a win = 100 which players are the highest number that gets to the 100. MJ is like a 50. Lebron is like a 45 or so. You can't win with just those guys individually but no other player puts you in a position to win more than them.

To most, Kobe.

To me, Lebron and it ain't even close.

Technically, there is no right answer. I don't even know the difference in scoring averages, but you gotta look at how much more Kobe shoots than Lebron. And as for titles, people just differ in their opinions, but I think they're supremely overrated when judging an individual. There's too much that that individual can't control to make them very meaningful...like spending 7 years in Cleveland with Mo Williams as the best sidekick you ever had vs going to a team as a rookie with Shaq basically having all his prime years ahead of him.

Lebron is better, but if you wanna win titles, you play with Kobe.

Signed,

Larry Bird

Let's rehash that one.

it depends what you're asking.

Kobe isn't in the same world as LeBron in terms of production and helping his team win.

but Kobe has been very successful individually and also played on championship teams.

when someone asks me 'who is better', i am looking for the guy that at his average game would let me win the next game the most amount of the time. not the guy who has won the most as a team in the past.

kobe has probably had the more illustrious career, but isn't the better player... if you follow.

Once again, saying I'm twisting words when I'm basically quoting a guy.

What part is twisted, he said it. He said Lebron is better. He said he'd choose Kobe on his team to win titles.

I ain't twisted shi!!! LOL
