Why are the Rockets going so hard for Dwight? He's not gonna sign an extension there and they aren't winning it all next year with him.

cause a sign and trade is still valuable. Get 1 yr otuta dwight, bump up attendance/sales, and then move him to brooklyn in the offseason in a s&t for multiple picks/players.

Why would Brooklyn do a sign and trade when they know they'll get Dwight regardless?

cause due to bird rights Houston can offer him more money than any other team (1 more year). so why would howard want say 5 yrs when he can get 6?

So apparently we're now looking at the Knicks letting the Rockets swallow their poison pill contract to Jeremy Lin and instead doing a sign-and-trade to bring Ray Felton back to NY.

Seems likely. I don't see how they can effectively pay Lin $30 million over the next three years (counting the luxury tax). The sample size of his performance is too small and too skewed by D'Antoni when he was around. Still don't know if Lin can run the Woodson team with Carmelo and Amare in there. I don't think there would be enough shots to go around.

The offer sheet from Houston was for $25 mil over 3 seasons with ~$15 mil in the third season. The article I read said the total cost of the contract would come closer to $30 mil over the 3 seasons.

with the luxury tax, his deal would cost the Knicks like 25 million in 2014-15 alone.

The Rockets did the backloaded deal so the bulk of Lin's contract would match up with the bulk of Melo and the other guy they have. The Knicks would be looking at over $40 mill in luxury tax. Sorry, but Lin isn't worth that. Let the Rockets make that mistake.

It's obvious the Knicks aren't high on Lin. They brought on Jason Kidd and of course traded for Felton. Can't see them matching.

Speaking of Jason Kidd:

Ah. I thought the article said it would bring the total to $30 million.

It actually brings the 2014-15 season to $30 million just for Lin alone.

So let see... rockets are trying to get Howard for a Year, and will be paying Lin and Asik 15+ mil in the 3rd year? Who do the Rockets have again? Buncha Vet minimums?

I"m not necessarily disagreeing with you, but I'm sure when they waived him, they didn't think he was a guy who could average 18 and 8 or whatever he put up.

Updated analysis of what matching would do to the Knicks (according to ESPN):
A team source tells ESPNNewYork.com the third year of the Rockets' offer -- worth $14.8 million -- makes it unlikely the Knicks would match. If the Knicks were to match the offer, they would also be subject to a luxury tax in the third year, potentially bringing their total out-of-pocket cost for Lin to about $43 million in 2014-15.

How is it possible that with a $14mil salary in 1 season, that equates to $43mil total for one season?

Luxury tax. Melo and Stat make the bulk of their money when Lin's deal shoots sky high, which is why the Rockets structured it how it is.

But saying that equates to paying Lin $43 mill is quite dramatic.
