I'm significantly confused by the uncalled "foul" at the end of the Spurs/Thunder game last night on the inbound play. Is there not a rule regarding how close the defender can be to the playing inbounding the ball in the NBA?



Isn't Ginobili way too close on this inbounds? His foot is on the line and, unless it is a major optical illusion, it seems at least his left arm above his shoulder is completely out of bounds. Surely you can't be both stepping on the line and waving your arms in the out of bounds area during a throw-in?

Clearly was a violation if based on the rule.

Section III-The Throw-In
a. The throw-in starts when the ball is at the disposal of a player entitled to the throw-in. He shall release the ball inbounds within 5 seconds from the time the throw-in starts. Until the passed ball has crossed the plane of the boundary, no player shall have any part of his person over the boundary line and teammates shall not occupy positions parallel or adjacent to the baseline if an opponent desires one of those positions. The defensive man shall have the right to be between his man and the basket.

Which makes Chris Webber's epic meltdown over the no foul call a little funnier than it already was.

Also:

In the NBA it's a warning the first time except in the final 2 minutes of the fourth quarter or in overtime.
EXCEPTION (5): In the last two minutes of the fourth period and last two minutes of any overtime period, a technical foul will be assessed if the defender crosses or breaks the plane of the boundary line when an offensive player is in a position to inbound and prior to the ball being released on a throw-in.
