I am finally getting paid tomorrow! First paycheck in 10.5 weeks. For those who I didn't tell, I spent the better part of the last two weeks sleeping in my car near my job - in Jersey, so Biffy's dream of me living in New Jersey came through - because I could no longer afford the gas and tolls. The week prior, I was simply blowing through the EZ Pass without an EZ Pass and the fines are just pouring into my mailbox ($58 a pop).

I am going to play some Warcraft right now and I will hammer out a schedule immediately thereafter.

There really isn't any reason to be "out." I can explain, later, how to become a true GM that perks in every so often.

Re: 2015 offseason

I just accidentally x'ed out of a long introduction/apology/gameplan (which might have been a good thing for Shelton) so I will just shorten it up this time.

How to Play the Game Sparingly and Not Suck or Ruin it For Everyone

1. Introduction

First of all, obviously, the players that play more will have a competitive advantage unless you are Sioux City and drafted nothing but 18-year-olds in the 2010 draft and are reaping the benefits. That said, it won't be brutal. As you know, there are five main tenets to running an OOTP team.

1. Drafting
2. Contracts
3. Lineup changes
4. Lineup tweaks
5. Farm system management

Luckily, the game allows you to use your coaches to handle some or all of that shit for you. Now, the instruction begins so Shel ... start reading now.

2. Application

When you log-in, there will be a MANAGER OPTIONS tab on your screen. Click that.

Image

The top section is unimportant. The middle section on the left side is where the good stuff begins.

TEAM CONTROL SETTINGS and VACATION SETTINGS

For the purpose we are decribing here, VACATION SETTINGS is useless. That is for people who want full control of the team when they are ready and want the AI to handle other shit when they are away. Since you are planning on being away more than here, focus on the top section; TEAM CONTROL SETTINGS

Let's look at each section (I'll bold important stuff)

Setting Lineups / Depth / Pitching Staff
Defines who is responsible for setting lineups, depth charts, and the pitching staff for your team. You can choose to manage these aspects of the team yourself, or delegate them to the manager from your team personnel as described in Coaches and Personnel. If you delegate this to your staff, they will make adjustments weekly, or any time that you or the AI makes a roster move.

Roster Moves
Defines who is responsible for making roster moves (promotions, demotions, and so forth) for your team. You can choose to manage these aspects of the team yourself, or delegate them to the manager from your team personnel as described in Coaches and Personnel. See Roster Rules and Management as well for more information on roster moves.

Transactions (READ MORE ABOUT THIS BELOW)
Defines who is responsible for making transactions for your team. Transactions include signing and releasing players. You can choose to manage these aspects of the team yourself, or delegate them to the manager from your team personnel as described in Coaches and Personnel. See Roster Rules and Management as well for more information on roster moves.

Minor League Signings/Releases
Defines who is responsible for minor league signings and releases, including minor league personnel signings. You can choose from your manager identity or the minor league managers from your team personnel as described in Coaches and Personnel.

Minor League Promotions/Demotions
Defines who is responsible for minor league roster moves, specifically promotions and demotions. You can choose from your manager identity or the minor league managers from your team personnel as described in Coaches and Personnel.

Minor League Lineups/Depth/Pitching
Defines who is responsible for managing the day-to-day affairs of minor league teams in your organization, including all settings and strategy for minor leagues. You can choose from your manager identity or the minor league managers from your team personnel as described in Coaches and Personnel.

Initiate and React to Trades (READ MORE BELOW)
Defines who is responsible for initiating and reacting to trades. You can choose to manage these aspects of the team yourself, or delegate them to the manager from your team personnel as described in Coaches and Personnel. See Trading for more information.

Referencing the above, settings TRANSACTIONS to a MANAGER might give you results you don't like. As for the last one (TRADES), same thing. If you leave it on a manager the CPU teams will start trading your players.

3. The Two Ways You Can "Play"

A. Extremely Hands-Off

Set all of the above to managers. They will run your entire team. You will still be in charge and can make a move or fire someone, but don't get pissed if they immediately fuck it up for you. I.e., you sign a guy and your manager waives him. You will still catch me IM'ing you on occasion to log in and do something, but otherwise, you'd probable "need" to log in once every four weeks or so.

B. Kinda Hands-Off

You handle any transactions but let the manager handle ALL day-to-day operations. Manager will set the lineup, handle all of the minors (including minor league deals and releases), and such and you handle drafting and contracts. You could probably be on a once-a-month schedule during the season but need to be around for the offseason a little more, if not all the time.

If you choose one of these two routes, please make sure you have the right manager for you.

Image

Go to your team's main screen, scouting, and click on your manager. Look at the right side.

OVERALL ROSTER STRATEGY

These can't be changed. That is who he is. My guy likes prospects a lot, is neither here nor there on pitching/hitting or defense, favors speed and OBP. When I hired him, I looked at this.

OFFENSIVE STRATEGY TENDENCIES

Same thing, make sure you have a guy that has the same idea as you.
