First few times he started doing it, I tried holding him until he fell asleep and moving his hand every time he tried to put his thumb in his mouth.

It was an hour or 2 of torture for him and me.

90% of them need braces anyways. So let them do whatever gives you 30 minutes of peace

My oldest used a pacifier. It was a blessing and a curse. When he fell asleep with it he was out cold for a good while. But if it fell out he went crazy. He has a gap in his front teeth and will need braces regardless of ever having used a pacifier. My ex had a gap until she got braces in her teens. My two younger ones have absolutely perfect teeth at this point. Neither one of them used the pacifier. It may or may not have anything to do with it. I don't know.
