Penn St
Re: Penn St
I am in between meetings and I am really suprised by how out of control this whole thing has gotten.
There was 1 person that we know of that committed unspeakable evil and perhaps a dozen people who turned a blind eye. Those people deserve everything that is comming to them. Fire them, prosecute the ones that committed crimes, and expose there objectable moral activities as much as possible.
But to condem an entire University? Seriously? Step off the ledge a little guys, you really think that the Big Ten is going to kick out an excellent educational partner out of the Big Ten because of this? Whats next? Gas the entire valley, burn it to the ground and bury it with 8 inches of concrete? The Big Ten may suspend the football team (it wont) but there is no rational reason they would kick PSU out of the BT.
And Reign, you can do whatever you feel is right. No one is going to judge you if you decide to finish your degree there. I love UI. If this happend at my school, I would cut off donations to the athletic program (the cause of the problem) and cancel my season tickets and take the money and donate it directly to a college or program I liked.

As much as it is one guy that sullied the reputation of the University. The University obviously covered it up in some manner and therefore should be held accountable. This is an institution wide thing, not just a mere little problem. Like I said earlier, had they come forward in 99, it would have just been Sandusky but they've covered this up for nearly 12 years.brwnbear wrote:I am in between meetings and I am really suprised by how out of control this whole thing has gotten.

Re: Penn St
youd think every coach and player gang raped kids... hate the 10 people involved not the whole damn school and team
Re: Penn St
The University is more than the dozen of so people within the athletic program that are part of this.Shiftdnb wrote: As much as it is one guy that sullied the reputation of the University. They represent the school whether you like it or not. From our very first practices, as an athlete we were told we are representatives of the school, I played for a Div III engineering school where football was the last thing on anyones minds.
Re: Penn St
it doesn't mean they have to be perfect or the whole school is shamed.Shiftdnb wrote:They represent the school whether you like it or not. Re: Penn St
Hopefully no one isn't taking it as if I'm condemning the whole school. But I do feel that enough people that I put my faith into violated that faith, so that I don't know if I can continue to support the school, as I may always question the ones that remain, no matter how distant they were to the situation. Since I have no direct connection and do have the considerable liking for 2 other teams, it's just as easy for me to lean more towards them and let my focus on PSU go away.

Re: Penn St
Shift is right. PSU should close its doors. All students should be placed on permanent bans from attending any other accredited institution and their credits should be forever frozen. All PSU grads should be fired immediately, because, after all, they should have known. And just to be safe word PSU should be stricken from all maps, google/maps should replace the satellite pictures with a black hole and your GPS should be upgraded so that it read, "now approaching, nothing."
Dammit shift, I dont want to get into another argument with you. Just suggesting you put slow down the crazy train before picking up the torch and pitchfork.

Where in the hell did I say they should close down the school, lose accreditation or any of the shit you are pulling from god knows where?

Re: Penn St
I should clarify what I stated to add "if they were still employing people involved with this", as PSU is.
Very good point brought up that I saw a bit ago on twitter--you wonder if they're keeping McQ around in order to keep his mouth shut?

I am being extreme, kinda like blaming an entire university for the actions of a few people.Shiftdnb wrote:brwnbear wrote:Shift is right. PSU should close its doors. Re: Penn St
I think this is it. Sandusky was allowed to skate and keep his priveleges because he has dirt on a lot of people. I think McQueary does too. Whether he's another villain or an unfortunate caught up in something too big for remains to be seen.jsence2 wrote:I should clarify what I stated to add "if they were still employing people involved with this", as PSU is.

Somebody wrote this in another article:
This is plausible. He grew up in State College. He played football at Penn State. He grew up viewing Sandusky as his superior (supposedly his family and the Sandusky's lived near each other, could he have been a victim too????). To me there's still no excuse for not intervening but this at least offers some sort of insight into why he did (or did not do) what he did.One blogger said it reminded him of Milgram's experiments.
That's where people will default to authority figures, even if it means doing something they know to be morally wrong. (Participants shocked people (they thought they were, anyway) based on being told it was okay by an authority figure, even though the person they were shocking was screaming (acting) in horror. )
What McQueary did, possibly, was walk in on Sandusky and basically freak out (in shock) that his authority figure was doing this. But he walked out thinking there was no way what he just saw was happening, and it couldn't be what he just saw since it was an authority figure (his boss Sandusky).

Re: Penn St
I took a break from following this last night and today (earlier this morning). I just got home from work and was watching sportscenter and got to think about this a lot. Being a coach at a school where our head coach is idolized by our community, this story is some what fascinating to me and not in a good way.
After reading other posts its very clear that I am with the majority that not only should Joe Pa be fired, but turn over the whole staff. Bring in replacement coaches, I don't care. The fact that people who knew about this are able to coach Saturday clearly shows that this university is still interested in football first IMO. Thats the worst part about this story. We need to stop focusing on the football "team" and how these firings may effect recruiting and start focusing on.
This story is crazy to me, and in my opinion this is by far the biggest sports news in my lifetime. Even more so than the OJ trial. I was old enough to remember the OJ Simpson trial and my mom being an alum and donor we obviously followed it very close. Joe Paterno may have been old and out of it but here you have a man who is arguably (since we go by wins and losses a lot) the greatest college coach ever and he's not being fired because of wins and losses but because, again in my opinion, was assisting and aiding a criminal. A disgusting human of the worst kind. Penn St University "Football" 10 days ago was still known as one of the cleanest and purest schools of them all, the third ranking school in america in revenue, will always be remembered for this one thing. Forever. It's crazy and unfortunately a lot more crazy stories, victims, witnesses, etc will come forward and Joe Pa will continue to look worse. It's shocking and I do not think if the University will recover in the next 25 years plus.
