Actually Yea, they do lose the option.
The point is so that you can't stash them in the minors forever. They get rule 5 eligible then on the 40 man to burn through their options so eventually you gotta call them up or release them.

yes, unless they are non-roster invitees. Shel is explaining it correct. Guys usually become rule 5 elig. at age 22-23 ish. once that happens to keep them on your team you have to put them on your 40 man. after that you get 3 more years of stashing them in your minors before on the 4th year you have to waive them to get him back in; thus allowing every other team a shot at putting them on their major league team.
at the start of spring training, everyone on 40 man is brought up to start this clock.

I think the reason it was so surprising for me this season is because I had so many players stashed on my 40. Usually I don't have to protect that many.
TL:DR - I'm used to being terrible and potentially being good is big, scary thing for me.

Also don't bother giving him multiple years, he won't want it. Been trying that a few sims. He wants a one year deal and then promptly asks for an extension of about 18-22 mil per.
