Occupy Wall Street
Re: Occupy Wall Street
Everyone throws out these blanket statements and expects people to just mold to them. Dave, I admire you for what you did, but not all of us are able to just "go out there" and "get em", some of us have family obligations to tend to, some of us have relationships that we want to devote ourselves to that prevent us from being like your boss and disregarding family/loved ones. I'm not knocking what you did, but it's not always as simple as it sounds. Some people have obstacles that are extremely tough to overcome, whether it be learning issues, financial issues, health, etc.
It's easy to say "move" when you don't have a mother with health issues that you need to stay nearby so you can help her in a moment's notice.
When you say things like that, it reminds me of one of my favorite sayins about the political mindset of this country:
If there were a man drowning in a lake 100 feet from shore, a Republican would throw him a 50 foot rope, hold the end, and tell him to swim the other 50 feet; a Democrat would throw him a 100 foot rope, let go of the end, and then walk away with the man unsaved, looking for some other good deed to perform.

if you believe this than you are in a lot of trouble.jsence2 wrote: If there were a man drowning in a lake 100 feet from shore, a Republican would throw him a 50 foot rope, hold the end, and tell him to swim the other 50 feet; a Democrat would throw him a 100 foot rope, let go of the end, and then walk away with the man unsaved, looking for some other good deed to perform.
democrats aren't some fuckin group of saints.
and like i said... you don't have to 'go out there and go get em'. i said earlier, i wouldn't expect any or most people to want to do that in their life. other stuff is more important and i certainly understand that. but DON'T SAY ITS NOT POSSIBLE. if its possible for 1, its possible for all.
obviously a comment like 'move' is intended to be a little over the top. i mean, some people can't just move. but my point is, figure it out. get it done.
how many people do you know, truly think about this, that work their fucking balls off and are willing to do ANYTHING to get by that still can't find a job? i promise you that you don't know any. because i don't have much extra cash to hire another trainee this year, but if a kid blew my socks off and showed me the passion and desire to be great, i'd hire him in a heartbeat. why? because thats gonna help my business, i'll take out a loan and hire him if i have to and if i believe in him that much.
make yourself employable, put yourself in a position that the person has to hire you. don't go out on 10 or 15 job interviews, get rejected at all of them cause nothing seperated you from joe public and then tell me you can't get a job. go sit outside some guys office with donuts and a coffee for a month straight if you really want that job. prove to him why you need the position and why he needs to have you in his company.

Dave, reread the quote. The Democrat throws him the rope and then lets go and walks away.....with the end of the rope he was holding not attached to anything.

Re: Occupy Wall Street
And here is a little food for thought for all those people trying to find their way and get a job. If you are under 42 years old, join the military. Great health benefits and you are being a true "man" by supporting your family by any means necessary. I personally would work 3 shifts at fast food restaurants if that is what it took to take care of my family, so I don't want to hear any whining about not having a job. You may not have a job in the field you specialize in but for fucks sake, it'll put food on the table for your family.

Re: Occupy Wall Street
uggghhhh, I'm sorry but this is an ignorant way to think of the last 10 years of war. Need I remind you that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, no weapons of mass destruction, no ability to attack us.GeorgesGoons wrote:
The DEFENSE budget should be huge, you do not want these idiots fighting in your back yard. I don't want my family to grow up in a war torn nation, and it takes money to move our fight to them rather than them bringing it to us.
This is not the same world our grandparents grew up in. It's not just as simple as getting up and moving to a new place. Back then there was prosperity to move to. Not to mention in todays world wives work, do you force her to look for a job in a new place as well. Do I take the kids out of school? What is the cost of living in this new place? It takes a lot of money to move these days.DRiccio21 wrote: so move... make it work.
my grandfather, along with most of our immigrant grandparents, would laugh in our faces if they heard what we were complaining about.
Also a lot of you are acting like this is one or two people getting laid off, not hundreds of thousands every month.

Then join the fucking Army if they can't find a job. My point was that there is another way than sitting on unemployment not providing for your family because you cant get a job doing what YOU want to do. Real men do whatever it takes to take care of their families, that was what I was getting at.

Re: Occupy Wall Street
I am also tired of hearing the shit about unemployment.
I quit my job last month like the fool I am. That aside, I am going to be employed starting tomorrow. I am waiting tables. I haven't waited tables since I was 19 and I am not too fucking happy about it. I am GM of a restaurant or a sales executive, hear me roar! Not happening right now. But it is work, it puts some (albeit pitiful) scratch in my pocket, keeps me sane, and keeps me around people. The guy that sells water, newspapers, and (in the winter) hot chocolates on the Cross Bronx Expressway's entrance/exit ramps, he is "unemployed" and has been for a while. Just about the most ghetto motherfucker you will ever meet ... probably makes more than 25% of the people that drive past him.
As corny and stupid as it may sound, every unemployed person should watch the Rocky series or even the goddamn Terminator. Take a beating; keep on going. Take another one; keep on walking. And to those with families? Set a better example by never quitting, never compromising.

Hey, George. Wonder if West Point will still take me. I had the grades and test scores to get in ... in 1997.

.... what point are you proving here? Did he tell you to ONLY join the Coast Guard Reserves? He said, 'under 42, join the military.' Re: Occupy Wall Street
The family obligation that you have is to do what is necessary to acquire a job. Your relationship is a 'want,' like it or not. You and your other should both understand that without a job, that relationship is much more difficult. As for all of your issues (learning issues possibly excluded), that's why you do the right things on a day to day basis to prevent being in a terrible situation.jsence2 wrote:Everyone throws out these blanket statements and expects people to just mold to them. If it's that serious, then she can go with you. There is almost always an answer. The fact is, people are worried about what they want and what they think they need, not what they REALLY need.
It's easy to say "move" when you don't have a mother with health issues that you need to stay nearby so you can help her in a moment's notice.
Instead of making the difficult decisions in life, we'd rather sit around and look for a helping hand.

Are you kidding? God you're so ignorant to what I'm trying to say. You say get up and move I point out that it's not that easy because you have decisions to make. You say make the decision but you really have no clue what it's like to make those decisions. So lets say you've made the decision to stay because your wives industry isn't hiring where you may (or may not) get a job. To me it seems like everything to some of you is black and white and I envy you're ability to see it that way, but despite what you think we live in grey fucked up world where bad things happen to good people and they deserved to be helped out regardless of a few that take advantage of it and have their hands out.DRiccio21 wrote:so make the fucking decisions that are best for your family!Shiftdnb wrote:This is not the same world our grandparents grew up in. Why cant you leave, and your wife stays behind until her industry hires in your area, or she retrains? A lot of people do this. So you're saying that because someone is unemployed they should go fight in wars that they may feel is wrong or illegal. Not to mention what about the people that have preexisting conditions that can not join the military? Again something you're viewing as black and white without looking at all the variables.GeorgesGoons wrote:Shiftdnb wrote:GeorgesGoons wrote:And here is a little food for thought for all those people trying to find their way and get a job.
