Slavery was never condemned in the Bible. However, God never stated that is was necessary. Man abolished slavery. God has condemned homosexuality. It's apples and oranges.

God creates man -- God allows slavery -- man abolishes slavery -- God condemns homosexuality -- man abolishes God -- man allows homosexuality.

Perfect logic!

This would hold some water if not for the fact that God created woman as a companion to man. He created woman so that man would have someone with whom to share a life with. If He had wanted a man to be with a man, He would have made it to where men could procreate together.

Well this would work if not for the fact that we evolved from apes (a species like many, many animals in nature where homosexuality and bisexuality is common).

I'm all for believing in a higher power to help explain that which is unexplainable (the first spark of life, the origin of the Big Bang, etc). When scientific proof can show evolution without a doubt, I find it hard to believe that anyone still follows the story of the Garden/Adam and Eve.

I mean, are people also going to start claiming dinosaurs didn't exist and the bones are all fake?

I am more aware every day of my own depravity. I'll tell you flat out, I did do that and I it is a great regret of mine. Thankfully God does not call us to be perfect, but to accept His forgiveness and understand that He loves us more than we can even know.

if marriage is a union between a man and a woman to create a offspring and continue, what about women who are unable to have a child? should they not be allowed to marry? or a man who is unable to produce sperm and semen to recreate, should he stay single for life?

A few responses:

1) Shel, we all fall short of the glory of God. He knows my sins, I have confessed them and asked for forgiveness and the help to keep from sinning in the future. That is all I'm going to say on that, not going to get into a "well you better not have _____ or you're not a Christian" battle.

2) Evolution is a scientific fact. All species have evolved in different ways (example, Inuits are shorter and have shorter limbs due to being in the cold, and their bodies have evolved over time). However, to claim that we have evolved from another species entirely is not only ignorant, it's a joke. Even Neanderthals were far superior of primates.

3) God created the world. He created dinosaurs. Those dinosaurs were likely finished off during the great flood. Notice the only animals that are considered to be direct ancestors from dinosaurs are marine-based animals....hmm, wonder why that would be?

4) Not all people are meant to bear children. Those people can adopt, which is one of the most noble things you can do in this world. My aunt could not have children....and she adopted, and she loves him like her own son. Marriage isn't just about bearing children, but it IS between a man and a woman.

Marriage is a religious creation. Therefore, it should be rooted in religion and its teachings.

A few responses:

2) You are skipping a few steps to go from primates to Neanderthals (Australopithecus and Homo Habilis/Homo Erectus). But, primates can learn to use tools and can learn sign language. They have hierarchical systems within their living groups. To think they're that far off from early man is a bit of a stretch.

Then again, we all evolved from single cell organisms.

3) Dinosaurs are similar to today's water based animals because life started in the oceans. The first dinosaurs were water dwelling creatures that developed the ability to breath on land over a period of time. Eventually some types of dinosaurs developed feathers (yes, we've found the fossils) and evolved into birds. Other small dinosaurs developed fur and became something like small mammal creatures.

Marine based animals today resemble dinosaurs because they were around before dinosaurs. In the same way, birds today resemble some types of dinosaurs (Archaeopteryx is the bridge to today's birds and is similar to both pterodactyls and velociraptors) because they came from dinosaurs.

Then there are people who are paid or volunteer their time to completely analyze the bible kind of like Jsense has and that is why religion bothers me, take it for what it is and be done with it. Gays should be allowed to get married period.......who is to say man and woman are the only people who can wed....someone who lived 2000 years ago and that may have never existed?

Actually I stated that the beauty of religion is it is what you make of it? Where did I even mention Penguins name? Now you have me confused beercop, I just dont see where I put down anyones opinion so much as I just wish the bible and Christianity/Catholicism would stay out of it.

Obviously its hard to not keep it out of it because tradition is tradition but it has spiraled way out of control now at this point talking about evolution etc.

Considering the population of the entire world, approximately 1/3 is some type of Christianity.

I'm fairly certain that 33% isn't a majority, but I digress.

Of the 33% that would categorize themselves as being some type of Christian, how many are likely to believe in literal interpretation of the Bible?

Well, in America, approximately half of those that are Christian claim the Bible should be taken word for word. This is actually being generous considering the number is actually below half according to polls (40% for Protestants, 45% for other non-Catholic Christians, 10% for Catholics).

If that extends to the world, you're looking at ~17% of the worlds population believing this. I'm not sure this can ever be considered a majority.

My favorite poll of all though is that as level of education increases, the percentage of people that believe the Bible is to be taken literally indisputably declines.

everyone has their own opinions, but in the end all people are people. There certainly is no reason to get in an uproar about this. It is funny people push so hard for marriage when my wife and I laugh that we get screwed due to it. If we were single she would get back twice as much at tax time. the girls she works with tell her all the time how the put one over on the government by claiming their husband ran out on them and all the sudden all kinds of government assistance comes rolling in.....

In the end we all want to live in a world where we do not have people telling us what to do or how to live.

God is to say that man and woman are the only people who can be wed. I am to say that only man and woman can be wed. Jsence is to say that only man and woman can be wed. The majority of people in the United States are to say that only man and woman can be wed. Thats the beauty of democracy right there.

And religion needing to stay out of politics...I dont know what to say to that....
