Oh, you mean the government that was FOUNDED by Christians and based around the Christian faith?

Like you said....if you don't wanna read it, don't read it. Everyone in here has the right to talk about whatever topics they feel in a respectful manner, and I think for the most part we have done that in this thread. I don't see why an engaging discussion should be shut down just because Packsy doesn't like it.

Your not asking questions Nick, you are trying to pick a fight.
I am sorry if anyone was offended by anything I said, but I do stand by my beliefs and I do my best with Gods help to live them out every day. My purpose is to never thump a Bible to beat something down someones though, but to serve others and do whatever I can to tell them about how much God does love them no matter who they are or what they have done and how He wants to have a personal relationship with you.

religion, yes. religion is a man-made concept. you have to separate religion and true faith which are not always the same. many claim to be christian because they know they're not buddhist or muslim and they believe in some form of God. that doesn't make them a true follower of Christ. there is a distinction there. when man begins to muddle up the simple message that is the gospel of Christ, problems arise. the imperfect cannot impose itself upon the perfect. what you end up with is imperfection. now, some would carry that over to the bible itself and say that since man was involved in its writing, it cannot be perfect nor inerrant. however, that's the beauty of the bible. trace the history of the codices and you will see that doctrinally speaking, the bible we have today is in line with the originals, despite years and years separating authors, the number of authors, the assaults against it, etc. it has withstood the test of time if you do the research to see it. the more we find, the more it is confirmed. as for picking things out of it to parse, understand that when you read/study the bible, you have to understand the audience to which it was written originally, who was being spoken to, the culture of the time, etc. you can't just pull things out willy-nilly and try to make some grand point about it.

back to your statement, you could also make the argument that those of faith have done more good in the world than any others as far as starting schools, hospitals, charities, etc. goes both ways.

interesting thread. it's always intriguing to see different ideas that people have about the bible and things of faith, whether for or against. i've ran across many people of differing beliefs on the internet, and it's always good to get a look at the points-of-view of others, even if i disagree, sometimes vehemently.

as for gay marriage, i think it is the term marriage that is the sticking point for many people because of the religious implications of it. some worry that if gay marriage is legalized, people could theoretically impose upon a religious institution to perform a marriage that they do not agree with. personally, any church that is performing a gay marriage should seriously look at the bible they are reading. in no way can that argument be made. the same would be said for appointing gay priests. it baffles my mind.

my solution for the gay marriage issue. take the government out of marriage altogether. have the government issue a civil union license. have churches perform marriages and use that term.

also, some oppose gay marriage for fear that it can open a slippery slope to other things. if i am a polygamist and i see gay marriage legalized, i'd have to wonder why i can't marry four women. we're consenting adults. why is it not legal? you can carry that argument to other things as well.

good to see that, for the most part, people have been respectful in this thread. i always find it amusing to see that christians are often thought of as being the bigoted, close-minded crowd, when in reality, you'll find that many are just as bigoted and close-minded about those of faith. and sadly, some believers can be overly righteous and pious about things at times. we should all remember who it was Jesus spent most of his time condemning while he was on earth: the religious

True, but if it wasn't religion it would be something else. For whatever reason, mankind seems destined to destroy itself.

Amen to that, Pengy. It's about loving those you encounter no matter their faults or sins, and praying that they know the love that only the Lord our God can offer. I tell you what....if not for my faith, I don't know how I would have gotten through the past month. The only thing giving me solace right now is knowing that my uncle and my grandmother are seated at the table of God, and that I will someday see them again.

I too share your beliefs, when i see my grandfather again, i have a whole lot of questions for him. But i will say one thing, although i believe alot in God, i often wonder why my Wifes uncle cant enjoy what me and my wife have? He is a gay man. Because of scripture that was written along time ago? I believe in the bible, i believe in God, and i believe he should also be able to enjoy the same happiness me and my wife have. I guess thats part of the Bible i dont believe in, but im sure Jesus will forgive me for that.

Just in case people on the forums didnt know this....being gay is not a sin according to the church. Acting on your homosexuality and homosexual marriage is when its a sin.

And buckeye, I dont see a reason why he wont enjoy what you and your wife will. I dont claim that if you marry another man you will go to hell. We all sin...

The world ( in my opinion ) keeps getting worse and worse.

America which used to be rooted in some sort of value, is getting worse and worse.

We are turning into a European country, yep!

The gay alliance is now in our schools and religious groups are dwindling. Believe what you want, but the future of the world doesnt look good.

Our president is a pussy.
Boys arent turning into men anywhere...there turning into pussies.

And what happens when a gay couple wants a child. Well, then they adopt, and more and more children get raised in a dsyfunctional, non traditional home.

So go ahead and call me a hater or whatever.
Its my opinion, and I just wanted to say that. :)

Shit, then no one should be allowed to have kids since 90% of homes seem to be dysfunctional nowadays.

Okay, so Penguin should shut up because he believes in something the majority of humans in this world believe but your opinion is fine because you pull it straight out of you ass. Makes a lot of sense to me.
Actually I stated that the beauty of religion is it is what you make of it? Where did I even mention Penguins name? Now you have me confused beercop, I just dont see where I put down anyones opinion so much as I just wish the bible and Christianity/Catholicism would stay out of it.

Obviously its hard to not keep it out of it because tradition is tradition but it has spiraled way out of control now at this point talking about evolution etc.
Just using him as an example because he is one of the more vocal posters in this topic trying to enlighten people on his point of view but just take your pick. I assumed your post was pointed at people who were on the side of religion and that is where their moral beliefs come from.

If you were not raised in the church than it is hard to understand but that is the basic building blocks of someones moral beliefs and to say leave it out of the situation is not an option. A christian should spread the word; as Jesus is the only way to salvation. You may take it as the bible thumpers are shoving it down my throat but christians are looking at saving souls and the only way to make it to heaven is to live like our savior Jesus Christ.

Um.

Considering the population of the entire world, approximately 1/3 is some type of Christianity.

I'm fairly certain that 33% isn't a majority, but I digress.

Of the 33% that would categorize themselves as being some type of Christian, how many are likely to believe in literal interpretation of the Bible?

Well, in America, approximately half of those that are Christian claim the Bible should be taken word for word. This is actually being generous considering the number is actually below half according to polls (40% for Protestants, 45% for other non-Catholic Christians, 10% for Catholics).

If that extends to the world, you're looking at ~17% of the worlds population believing this. I'm not sure this can ever be considered a majority.

My favorite poll of all though is that as level of education increases, the percentage of people that believe the Bible is to be taken literally indisputably declines.

http://www.gallup.com/poll/27682/OneThi ... -True.aspx
My mistake, I meant to say it is the largest religion but thanks for being Johnny on the spot! But to start quaoting poll results is a joke. If poll results were true John Kerry would be president.

Maybe traditional can sometimes be a tad bit overrated.

I dont know about the whole dysfunctional thing. Most gay guys I know have their shit together. Good jobs lined up, well groomed, compassionate, etc. I mean aside from my boss wanting to deep throat me ( :x  :? ), Id say gays are better suited to raise kids more than many "traditional" parents.

*This is very anecdotal by the way
