I'm thinking Suarez just made the absolute smartest move on a soccer field in his entire life. Great thinking, great move. Do what you gotta do to get the W.

But I guess the soccer purists will talk about how disgraceful it was and blah blah blah.

To be honest, at the speed that play developed, I doubt he even had time to think. He's not a defender. He probably just thought "oh God, it's going in" and just reacted.

The purists shouldn't complain; he got a red card and was sent off, and a penalty was given. Justice was done. It's Ghana's fault they didn't and couldn't convert.

I mean it sucks for Uruguay that he's their scorer in a game where they probably need to knock the ball in to stay with the Dutch, but it's much better than the alternative.

Sucks for Ghana, though

And its over...

Seems the South Americans where a little over-rated. Guess I'm going to have to call off my Brazil-Argentina party.

As an Italian fan, I hate Germany.

As a soccer fan, I have enjoyed watching them play in this tournament. They play such fluid, beautiful football. They play like Brazil used to play.

Scary thing is, this team is so young....and they may not have realized this potential if Ballack hadn't gotten hurt.

They're my pick to win it all.

Exciting 2 minutes there.

Except 1) the PK shouldn't have been retaken, the goalie came off his line on top of the encroachment, so you just play on; and 2) a THIRD PK should've been given for him taking down Cesc Fabregas

The last 15 minutes of that match might have been some of the most exciting of the entire tournament. What a great second half.

You are right about the first 75 min being boring. Paraguay packed it in with 8 defenders the entire time.

I agree, pretty cool though. Captain to captain...I wish I was one of those guys that got to do that, imagine how many jersey's Landon Donovan has of big name players! That would be a sweet display case room upon retirement...

Completely agree. Probably the greatest sacrifice in World Cup history

Absolutely man.

Soccer purists can suck it. You do what you gotta do to win a game, especially a game of that magnitude.

Props to him. He's my new favorite player, my 1st ever favorite soccer player.
I would like to go on the record and say that - on this forum - I had a chat with J about the risk/reward of a handball to save the goal. It is quite clear that Suarez is an NDL member.

Yeah I saw that and as someone who doesn't know shit about soccer, it made me wonder why the hell players don't do that more often to stop goals? I related it to basketball in the thinking that there are times when you need a good foul just to put a guy on the foul line to earn 2 points instead of just giving him a dunk or layup. In this case, you make him take a penalty kick over giving him the goal right then and there. What a great play.

Because a red card isn't just an ejection and a one-match ban. They are reviewed and can be turned into a lot more.

Fact is, Suarez DID cheat; and he did it purposely. And while I have no problem with him doing it under the circumstances, I DO have a problem with FIFA only handing him a one-match ban. I was pissed when Henry did it, and they claimed they could do nothing because the refs didn't catch it.

They caught this one. He should have been suspended for the remainder of the tournament.

I guess know you have to relate it in basketball to Rasheed Wallace running his mouth to a referee or getting a technical foul when he needs one more to be suspended for a game in the playoffs.

How is it any different then in basketball, you're down by 2 points with :05 left and the team that is leading has the ball, so when the inbound, you "intentionally" foul so you can get the ball back??

I fail to see ANY difference whatsoever with the 2 plays.

I also don't think he cheated whatsoever, he broke a rule. There's a HUGE difference between the 2.

I agree with you Shel that calling him a "cheater" is incorrect language. However, this wasn't like a guy who intentionally fouled a driving guard, tripped a forward skating down on an empty net, or a cornerback tackling a receiver before the pass is thrown.

It is a handball, the one thing you cannot use in soccer. This is a fucking flying dropkick to the face on the one-yard-line

I've seen a few handballs in this tourney.

I still fail to see the difference between the CB tackling a WR or a guy intentionally fouling a driving guard going in for an easy game winning layup.

Just don't see it. In every instance, you're saving a game winning play from happening. In every instance, it's not cheating and just making a great play.
