Netflix to raise rates for subscription that includes DVDs and streaming
By Jeremy C. Owens

Netflix (NFLX) plans to increase the price for its unlimited streaming and DVD subscription by almost 60 percent, the company announced Tuesday.
For unlimited DVD and streaming service from the Los Gatos company, the subscription rate will go from $9.99 a month to $15.98 a month, according to a news release.
Netflix currently offers its fast-growing streaming service as part of DVD subscriptions, but they will now be split. DVD plans will start at $7.99 a month for customers who wish to receive one DVD at a time; unlimited streaming-only service will cost $7.99 a month. Hence, signing up for both of those plans would cost a customer the new rate of $15.98 a month.
"By better reflecting the underlying costs and offering our lowest prices ever for unlimited DVD, we hope to provide a great value to our current and future DVD-by-mail members," Andy Rendich, chief service and operations officer for Netflix, said in the release.
Existing customers' rates will change starting with their first bill on or after Sept. 1, the company announced; new customers will be charged the new rates immediately.
This marks the first time that Netflix hasn't bundled online streaming with its DVD-rental plans since it began sending video over high-speed Internet connections in 2007, the Associated Press

The movie studios are jacking up the prices on them so naturally it just makes its way to the consumer.

The online streaming movies aren't that great. Has some good TV series, etc. though. Not sure what we will do....this will likely make us cancel as well. Not really worth 16/month. It's hard to eliminate one option when it seems some months we watch more streaming shows and then the next it is more movies. Oh well, I have a feeling overall this price increase will backfire. Will cause a lot of casual Netflix people to drop the service completely.

Tell them you're coming back, I'm sure they'll lavish you with thousands of dollars worth of gifts.
Maybe even give you 50% ownership of the company, though that may not be a good thing haha.

So they're basically charging for one service or the other and if you want both the rates are going up. You can get just streaming or just DVDs. This is stupid if you ask me cause this will just make me drop streaming from netflix and pick it up on hulu plus cause it's more the TV series I'm looking to get than the movies. Horrible decision by netflix.

So we can keep just the DVD option and drop the streaming option?
Well that's cool but still sucks as I was rolling through documentaries on the streaming.

I just looked at plan options on my account and it looks like the price increase is only major with streaming and 1 or 2 DVDs. I'm not sure but I think mine is maybe a $1 or $2 increase. I can't tell cause the plan is somewhat close to what I pay per month with the taxes included.

We mainly use the streaming so I went to that plan. Hell I had dvd here for a month once and I don't think anyone watched it. Streaming is fine for me and I am getting it for less than before.

Considering Blockbuster used to charge $4.99 per rental, this is still a relatively low price

Does anyone have Blockbuster online anymore and is it any good?
I am considering switching back over as this sucks about the increase.

If you watch 15-16 movies a month (either DVD, online, or combined), you've paid for it; it'd cost you that much to get 15-16 Redbox nights.
