Maybe the polls opened before I played my game? Or before the voting aid was updated?

Good point.

You know, they were talking about this same issue on 1st and 10 the other day and about preseason polls and the fact that we shouldn't rank teams until they have played games. Interesting discussion, but I hate Skip Bayless so I don't listen to much of what he has to say...

i've always thought there should never be a poll in any sport until about 1/3 of the season was over.

This is true. I normally keep my rankings in Excel and just move them based on games. There was so much craziness this week that I just rebuilt my Top 25. Plus this was the poll where I started moving guys down for not playing games. (yeah, not RL like, but I hate when games aren't played)

NDL LSU lost in their first game being played, they wouldnt be as high as a pre-season ranking. It would actually take some "data" to validate a ranking versus an opinion based preseason poll.

After week 5 or 6, I'd imagine I'm gonna have the exact same ranking whether a preseason poll and weeks 1 through 5 polls are calculated or not.

At any rate, my loss will be factored in at the same point in time when the rankings are started.

Simpler, i was ranked #1 preseason, lost, dropped. Say I keep winning, after week 5 or 6, I may be ranked #5 or whatever after working my way back up.

If we had no preseason polls and simply started in week 5 or 6, I'd imagine I'd be ranked right around #5, the exact same. I don't see why I wouldn't.

If I'm on the right track here, Shel is just saying that it doesn't matter where he started in the preseason poll, in week 5/6 he'd be in the same place whether it was the first poll of the year or third.

I'd like to think that is the case, but I do think people tend to leave teams higher in the rankings when they start there.

how about if 15 teams were undefeated still?

Western Michigan would be ranked about 20 if that was the case.

if we voted after week 5 and he was 5-0 with a win over #1 LSU, i'd guess he'd be much closer to 10.
