Winter Tires
Winter Tires
Question regarding tires for the masses: I recently bought a used Ford Explorer. Its FWD, so Im interested in getting a set of winter tires for next year.
If I get a set of tires and wheels for winter (and obviously keep a different set for summer), do I necessarily need to take it into a shop to get exchanged twice a year, or can I do that myself? Once theyre balanced on the wheels, I dont need to repeat the balancing everytime I change them out, do I?
I can change out tires easy enough, but rebalanacing is another issue (I also dont know how involved TPMS is)

Re: Winter Tires
No youre pretty handy.
In my former life as a teenager I traded rims and tires all the time.
But yes you may need to reset the TPMS or get new ones depending on the age of the truck.

Re: Winter Tires
Looking at tire rack, I can have them install the TPMS and mount/balance the wheels onto the tires. I imagine I could just swap them out myself twice a year unless Im missing something
Thanks for the reassurance!

Re: Winter Tires
Ive always gotten by in FWD and all-season tires, but with a baby on the way we decided either AWD or snow tires. I would rather have just gotten AWD but got a great deal on an FWD, so snow tires it is. Probably wont make a difference but it gives her peace of mind with a baby in back

Re: Winter Tires
You may not need snow tires on a FWD car.
I lived in Cleveland for 20 years with a FWD car and never had an issue. FWD cars go very well due to the engine being over the wheels. The weight helps with traction and since it is FWD, it is much harder to spin out.
If you want to try snow tires though, yes, once they are mounted on the rims, you should be fine to swap them yourself 2 times per year.
just note each tire where it came from so you can do your own rotation when you put them back on.

Still rocking the Focus! I'll have a 3 hr round trip commute for fellowship so no sense in putting those miles on a new ride. Gonna drive that baby into the groundCnasty wrote:No more Focus?!?!?
Sold the wife's fusion in exchange for the explorer
Re: Winter Tires
Yeah like I said I've never had a problem with FWD to be honest (ground clearance more so at times) but it makes the wife feel saferThe_Niddler wrote:You may not need snow tires on a FWD car.

We definitely need more friends for our quarterly hang out sessions!!!
Re: Winter Tires
The decision was put off for a year when I accepted the fellowship spot. If it was just me Id move in a heartbeat, but reality is its gonna be tough to move away from family with the kid. Wisconsin put an incredible offer on the table for us and we still couldnt pull the triggerCnasty wrote: You still considering a move to Wisconsin or Texas?
