Make sure you and your opponent are both using generic rosters without names.

was testing the letter grade ratings and how they can be different on the team matchup screen depending on how you enter the online game

Hopefully you didn't waste too much time with this...it's something I've posted a few times on the roster threads. Like BigMike posted earlier, it all depends on which roster file you have loaded. It doesn't effect the actual game or player ratings...but for some stupid reason EA didn't fix the team selection screen to only reflect the default roster. You can't trust it!!! However, it doesn't effect the actual game roster ratings at all. I'm sure you figured this out already though
