French/Irish War

Post by Matt90210 »

I'm assuming you all saw the obvious handball on SportsCenter last night during the France/Ireland soccer game. The bad call will keep the Irish out of the World Cup, but they have filed an official protest to FIFA.

Soccer fans are absolutely crazy, so I can only assume that a declaration of war is looming.

Yea, I dont follow soccer but was reading a little on this and its getting nasty.

It made me think how Ireland was denouncing FIFA. You would never see it as open in the NFL,MLB or whatever league and its hilarious what they said.

a replay is not totally out of the question right now. FIFA ordered a replay after Uzbekistan beat Bahrain in 2006 because the rules were interpreted incorrectly on a free kick.

Interesting fact! All I really know about soccer is you can't use your hands, so any and all input by those who follow the sport is great.

I like Henry but that was a bitch move. blatant hand ball. no worse than the Italians flopping in the penalty box so meh.

France had to go to playoffs to make it in a soft ass division, they will get rocked at the World Cup. Same with Portugal, fuck them, cept there hot ass women

Basically disregard what Nick said, and ignore the upcoming Jsence/Mward rant fight about who's better and all that crap. I'll sum it up...

KO's assessment is true, its not out of the question. Arsenal replayed an FA Cup match (england tourney) once too.

I highly doubt there'd be a replay, and France will probably weasel away. Henry admitted "To be honest, it was a handball, but I'm not the ref, you should ask him." Once again, it would take fortitude and class from France to agree to a replay... and lets be honest... that ain't happenin'

Disregard what I have to say!?! why? i know soccer. what did i say that wasnt true? It was a blatant hand ball he passed it to himself.

France is NOT what they used to be not by a long shot

and this is the same thing in terms of an ending like Italy vs Australia in the last WC

also most call the French team the "African All Star Team" as most aren't even from France they just migrated in cause theyre awesome at soccer, but i'm sure u knew this lord seeit

The problem is that this game was still in the balance. Who says France doesn't get the equalizer or win on PKs. Ireland can complain but this isn't a game wide error, it was one play in traffic.

Now FIFA does do replays if they believe the referee made an error that was too bad to let go. Last WCQ, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia I believe had to replay a match because of poor officiating that benefited one side.

I actually want a ton of soccer, as you can probably tell.

"FIFA ordered Uzbekistan to replay Bahrain in a play-off for the 2006 World Cup in Germany after the referee made a mistake when a penalty had been awarded.

However, in the aforementioned instance, the referee was guilty of wrongly applying the rules rather than missing an offence. An indirect free-kick was awarded against Uzbekistan when one of their players encroached on the Bahrain penalty area as the Uzbeks successfully converted a penalty. The correct interpretation would have been to order the penalty to be retaken."

Two other things...One play and more importantly one goal can be all the difference and that it is extremely unlikely to score in extra time, especially one that's already 3 minutes in.

Wilbon of all people made an interesting point today. He said that FIFA should agree to a replay not just for integrity sake, but more so for ratings.

For those who don't want a full game replay fine? I don't see what's wrong with starting up from overtime and if necessary penalties

That's right, it was 4 years ago so I don't remember everything exactly but it proved that FIFA will replay matches.

A few things.....

1) Replay will never happen. This is what Blatter and Platini wanted in the first place--that's why they went back on their decision to NOT seed the UEFA qualifying playoffs, because at one point it looked like Germany, France, and Portugal would all have to play in the playoffs....and they were NOT about to see two of those teams get paired together and lose one for the World Cup. So they went to a seeded system. Germany ended up not needing the playoff, but it still shows the lack of integrity by Platini....who is French.

2) Let's not kid ourselves, France would not have won that match if that handball gets called. Henry's a bitch, he always has been....he says he went to the ref and told him it was a handball. Really? He expects us to believe that shit?

3) Nick, if you think Grosso "dove" then you're a fucking tool. It's the Aussie's fault for LEAVING HIS FEET IN THE BOX. Grosso was smart and touched it past him....and had nowhere to go when the guy slid into his path to impede him from getting to the ball. Impeding someone unfairly is a FOUL anywhere on the pitch....and when the foul takes place in the box, it's a penalty. There was no dive.

Btw....when the guy slides....and Grosso steps over/around him with his right foot....and then the guy's body slides completely in front of Grosso's LEFT foot....how is that a dive? Seriously, if you want to see a dive, I can give you some great examples....but that wasn't one. Watch the replay a bit closer.
