DMZ/Connection question...

Post by bearass »

Ok so in my house we have 4 ps3s running through the router. My old 60gb ps3 is in the living room connected direct and is dmz'd. Dolemites is upstairs and cannot be dmz'd aswell because the netgear router I own only allows one address to be dmz'd. I was wondering about port forwarding to a certain ip only like say I have dolemite give his ps3 a static ip and open the necessary ports for that address. Is that possible or does it open those ports for every device connected to the router? Also I still sometimes have trouble connecting to some people and have to go direct. Would the modem bridge thing stop this? If not do I just open the ports on all addresses and do away with the dmz. I don't have much problems connecting but dole and my other roomate have had more trouble connecting since I dmz'd my ps3. Thoughts?

When you do port forwarding, the router asks for the IP address to use to forward those ports for. So you should be able to do it for just the PS3's that you want to and not everything on the router.

I would suggest that you first check to see if your router supports UPnP?
If so, turn that on first. This is known to fix issues with online gaming.

Give each PS3 a static IP and then run the Internet test on each PS3 and see what type of NAT connection each one has.

If you have a type 2, this is considered an "Open" NAT Type it is just that you are going through a router and that is why it is type 2 instead of type 1.

Type 1 - Connected directly to the internet (no router/firewall). Should have no issues.
Type 2 - Connected through a router properly. Should have no issues.
Type 3 - Connected through a router without open ports or DMZ setup for PS3. Everything should function properly, but you may have connection, voice chat or other issues.

Then go from there to troubleshoot each individual PS3's issues.

So if you have UPnP on and each PS3 has a static IP and each has a Type 1 or Type 2 NAT connection and you are still experiencing issues, then try port forwarding.

However, the issue might be that who they are trying to connect to has a Type 3 NAT. If that is the case, no matter what you do on your end, you will still experience issues with that person.
