Best Conference Tournament?
Best Conference Tournament?
I had an idea for a possible new tournament and wanted to get your guys take.
Basis: I was looking throught the list of teams and their respective coaches and I started to wonder about which conference had the top coach/team talent. So I thought of a way to get a few more games in, and try to settle the discussion on which conference is the best.
Set-up: Each conference would send out 4 teams to the tournament. Each team would seperated into 4 brackets. Once each conference has a team in each bracket, the brackets would be set-up randomly, in a single elimination style tournament. Each conference comish would determine the 4 teams that get to represent their conference. The comish can set-up a short playoff, or just play a series of single game eliminations or can award the invitation based on standings, sexual favors, bribes, prior conference records, ect.
Scoring: During the first round, each win would earn their conference a single point. Second round wins would earn earn their conference 2 points, then 3, then 4, and finally 5.
Awards - The scores would be tallied up and each conference would be ranked.

Re: Best Conference Tournament?
I like it. If it will happen or not is a different story, but yeah, cool idea.
Re: Best Conference Tournament?
great idea. you could expand it by having multiple tournaments so all teams could be involved. you keep similarly graded teams in each tourney. the only problem would be that the lesser conferences are sending their best C teams in with the best from the power conferences. then in the 2nd and 3rd level tourneys the difference could be D's playing B+ teams. that's why the conference challenges have always been matched up the way they have. with your idea or with expanding it david gets the chance to take down goliath. that's fun in of itself, at least it was for me when i've had lesser graded teams.
HOWEVA
doing the above would turn it into almost another NDL cup. do people want to do another thing like that? also, the season is about to start within the next couple of days. it seems like we used to have more time from draft to game 1 and that allowed time for things like this. part of the reason the conference challenges died out was because we had done so many and because the season would start. will guys stick with this, the season, and the ndl cup?
it would take an investment of time for someone to set it up, but once finished, it would give guys some extra games early on. i like the idea of thinking of something fresh to do besides what we normally do.
maybe we could do some sort of conference ryder cup type thing where we set up a bracket between the conferences and have a match play tourney of sorts. the commishes would rank their teams in order and match them up with another conference's teams. whoever wins the most matches, moves on. the power conferences could be matched up early to give the lesser conferences a fighting chance against each other or a random draw could match up anyone to start with. if a conference is out of balance with another, the conference with less teams gets to choose which teams from the bigger conference cannot participate in that leg of the tourney or they could choose which team from their own conference they want to play twice and seed them twice in their list. for example, they might take their #1 seed and then seed them #12 so their best team or coach would be playing twice.
the commishes would set up their lists based on whatever they may want, and it's blind to the others so no one would know who you're #1 or #5 is. the person in charge would be the only one who sees the lists and then posts the matchups. after the first round, you reset your lineup if you like.
the independents could be fed into the sun belt, wac, and mwc to give them an even 10 teams each. then everyone would have 10 or 12 teams. the only different one would be the big east with 8 and the goofy big 10 with 11.
another issue would be the fact we have 11 conferences. that sets up a bye for teams in the first round unless we break up a conference, but that defeats the purpose of a battle of the conferences.
just a different thought. this would take time as well. will guys invest it?

Why don't we just implement a scoring system like this for the NDL Cup?

thanks for volunteering.

Re: Best Conference Tournament?
good idea. we could also track OOC games throughout the year.ICE wrote:Why don't we just implement a scoring system like this for the NDL Cup?
the downside is the randomness of the cup tourney where you could have conference teams playing each other (just don't count these games maybe) and high graded teams playing low graded teams.

I will volunteer to track the tournament games. I will make a straight, point by point victory for each conference win in the championship, with each round counting for an additional point. Games played against an inter-conference foe in the tournament will not count. This way we can rank the conferences based on best team/coach talent.
I will also track a weight adjusted score for each game that will take into account the home team and team strenght. A win against an equal rated team will have 100% weightings, a team against a lower level team will have a lower weighting (less than 100%), and a win against a higher graded team will have higher weightings (more than 100%). This will give us a ranking of the conferences based on best coach talent.
I will post and update the conference scores. I think we should give the comish a trophy or something.
I will do this so long as the admins let me of course (cough cough aj)

Re: Best Conference Tournament?
like the weighting. good idea. only issue could be some conferences having more teams than others or facing interconference foes more than others. gives them less chance for points.
could do a winning percentage for each conference and do some sort of adjustment for the ratings within that. maybe a straight winning percentage for the conference (.653) and then add bonus points for beating higher graded teams as a bonus.
you could also add a bonus for wins in the 2nd round and on.

Re: Best Conference Tournament?
basically it depends on home and away and ratings of teams on how much you gain or lose.

Yea, I get that, but just wanted to see the actual system, not that I'd even understand it.ChampDizzle wrote:basically it depends on home and away and ratings of teams on how much you gain or lose.

I think only Holmey understands Holmeyism. Why do you think he added graphics to help us out on win goals?shel311 wrote:Yea, I get that, but just wanted to see the actual system, not that I'd even understand it.ChampDizzle wrote:basically it depends on home and away and ratings of teams on how much you gain or lose.
