legit ways to beat man cover 2

Post by Nole4real »

as mentioned in another thread, its almost to easy to sit back and call man cover 2 a whole game and be effective.

this has thrown me off because i use run this alot..especially last year because it was so "Safe" yet beatable and allowed guys who had a lesser rated team than i did to compete since drags were so effective vs it.

ive been mixing it up but have to be concientious about it knowing it has to be used in moderation since its overdone this year.

that being said, i know we have some great passers like shel, corey, packsy and etc who can throw vs anything who ive seen be effective vs it

this thread is not meant to bash the game, please dont turn it into such

also not meant for you to give away all your secrets but to maybe throw a few tips out there to us less talented passers as to how to be more effective at moving the ball vs it

i'll go 1st with something i just found last night...

for my moderation with passes to hb i dont think i threw 1 single hb screen last year

last night i threw a couple and they worked great both times vs a man defense...anyone else having success with that?

out routes?

also i think low drags (2-3 yards deep) have alot of success once the guy gets all the way across field..especially if u can lead the wr which i havent figured out how to do well yet

what say you?

4 games, 8 INTs.

So, takes these FWIW, lol:

1. HB screens, as Nole said. They work great if someone is sitting in man, for 5-7 yards a pop.

2. WR screens. In the past, WR screens never worked against man, as the DB guarding the receiving WR would never get blocked. This year, they usually make that block, and you can get some 10 yard gains here.

2. Drags.

3. Out routes. This one is tricky. You can't just blindly throw em like last year. I'm not a fan of throwing before they make there cuts, like some guys suggest, because you can still have your route jumped. What you wanna do is, the moment your guy makes his cut, you can tell if he has position or not. What I do if he does have position, is precision the pass low and away, keeping it away from the DB.

4. I like coming out in trips or bunches and trying to confusion on one side. Send the inside guy on an outside route(like the quick slant but to the outside). A lot of times, a LB or safety is guarding that inside WR and they just can't get there fast enough.

5. Quick slants. See out routes. You can't blindly throw em, but if you do have a good WR, they can get open a bit. Precision either UP, or to lead the WR.

So, if you really love playing cover 2 man, please don't bash someone's reports when they run 4 or 5 HB screens, 3-4 WR screens, and another 5-6 drag routes on you. ;)

Routes with double moves also help in cover 2 man. Post corners. Slant and go's etc. Also....just mix up the run and pass more this game and its seemed to help. Im playing with a C- Virginia offense and I have had great balance on offense by design.

Runs out of shotgun and draws are also helpful to run. Hope thats helpful.

Post-corners. Great one Louis.

Those work pretty good, you just gotta get the ball outside, away from that safety.

Yep, I think at least 3 of your INTs were on zone blitzes.

I usually don't throw short, as I always like to have 2-3 guys going deep. And that fucked me up against you. On those zone blitzes, outs worked awesome, and slants are good too timed right. But every time u brought a big blitz, I had no short options, and ended up making dumb decisions downfield.

Lots of shotgun runs is the trend i'm seeing. This can even work on 3rd and 6 or 7 against man cover 2. I think eventually guys will quit running it so much, but i could be wrong. I don't think I see it that often at all myself. I think crossing patterns where the wr's will actually make the db's run into each other can work as well.

I have figured out though that guys run multiple streaks on 3rd and almost any length. It can be 3rd and 5 and guys run 4 fly patterns (in anticipation of man and that being one way it's beatable against me anyway). Come out in a zone, and you might surprise yourself and come up with a stop once in a while. But this is coming from a guy giving up 30+ in scrimmages, so take it for what it's worth.

I just noticed a lot of games seem to be pretty good until the 4th, then when it's time to "come back"....i can't stop anyone damn it. Games get to be so back and forth, not unusual for 28+ scored in the 4th of games i play.

Not singling out Shel, but it probably worked to zone blitz because most guys run man, so when someone does something "out of the ordinary", it probably wasn't what he was expecting.

That's exactly correct.

Guys 3-4 years ago played zone like crazy cause it worked much better. So, I got really good at beating zone and calling plays that would only beat zone. So when guys would play man, i'd be lost, lol.

Now, it's almost opposite. I'm expecting so much man cause guys are playing it so much, when i see a different defense, I'm slower to react.

I think i've got lazy making reads the past few seasons. So, the silver lining, is this game has made me focus on my reads much more. As a result Ive passed efficiently the past few games ive played and NO INTS...wooohooo...Now that I said im in for a five int game vs. Florida. :D

I am by no means a great passer but one thing I've noticed is that is you have the time to really look at the positioning of the DB's in man coverage and then use precision passing to throw away from them it can be very effective. For example, several times I've been able to get the ball to a receiver on a post route against man by throwing behind them when the DB is positioned a step ahead of them and running stride for stride. You can't push the stick to its limit when throwing the pass. You have to be "gentle" with it. That's my one tip. Take it for what its worth.

That is the main thing I have noticed about this game. If you know how to make your reads you are waaaaaay ahead of the game. Defensively and offensively. This game, more than any other version before, works more like real football. This has been my favorite part of the game so far. Call your play and know what/who you should be looking at. Cause guess what.

You can still throw a curl or hook route, you just have to throw it so the ball meets the wr when he comes out of his break. And if anyone tries to press throw a streak and your WR doesn't even need great speed if he is strong enough to get a step on the DB for a huge play.

holy shit, you mean it can be done correctly-on purpose?!

that drives me crazy more than anything, you see 6 points right there for the taking but the qb will throw the damn ball no more than 7 feet off the ground and the db will knock it away or pick it!

please include me in the pm if don't wanna post it
