Is my PS3 dying?

Post by Knapp »

Here's my dilemma. Whenever I play online, I hardwire the PS3 to the router. I have cable internet and have never really had any problems with lag or disconnects for that matter. Suddenly this week I have three games in a row where the lag is atrocious and multiple disconnects each time. It's worse than dial-up. So I decided to try going hardwire directly into the modem, bypassing the router. No improvement. So, maybe it's the modem, right? Well, we have three laptops in the house (all obviously utilizing the wireless router) and none of them are having any problems with the internet and whenever we do any streaming of any sort. So while the problem could certainly be the modem (and I will contact my internet provider to see if I can get them to check it out), I was wondering if anyone has had this happen before and if maybe this is a sign that the PS3 is starting to have problems.

1) Try another modem port
2) Try another ethernet cable

Those would be my first two culprits. You also could have intermittent signal which wouldn't be as noticable with a wireless connection.
Also I would recommend logging into the internals of your modem and running a ping test.

It seems like a lot of people are experiencing disconnects right now though for this game...do you play any others online? I think EA has a lack of servers for NCAA Football right now so there are some connection issues, especially at night when there is heavier traffic.

I figured it was that, the first time or two. But then when I tried to play a league game this morning at 10am and we could hardly get to the coin flip, I knew better. Then I found some random opponents earlier tonight, but no improvement.

I don't think it's the ethernet cable but I will test out the theory and try a different one, just to make sure.

I had this happen a few times. What you were saying, about the wireless not really experiencing anything out of the ordinary. The problem was my cable modem. I was playing a lot of games, matter of fact it was Stimpin and I playing all the bowl games from this year. We would get quite a few disconnects in a row, over a couple days. Sometimes it would say that I quit the game, or Stimpin quit the game and THAT was not the case. Sometimes we'd get the cnxn to opponent has been lost message and the lag was horrid most of the time.

Then one day, in the middle of a game, it said cnxn to opponent lost. I went to my phone to send an AIM msg to stimpin, and noticed my wifi on my phone was connected to the wireless router, but I had no internet cnxn. Hmmmm....I wonder what the hell? I call COX Communications immediately and they try to ping the modem and no luck. I of course reset the router/modem several times with the tech on the phone and he keeps saying he cant see the modem. All lights working fine....

So, I tell the dude, I have another modem if you wanna try to ping that one? He says ok, takes the numbers and addresses from the modem and puts them into his CPU over at COX and BAM! He pings my shit and I am back in business. What was the problem? Modem went bad.

And I think my router is on the way out too, Linksys WRT54G from 2006. Le SIIIIIIIIGH

I just replaced my wrt54g. I kept losing signal and getting disconnected from games.

Try this. Get a new HDMI cable. If it doesnt fix, then take it back.

theres a file transfer utility that you run. I think its in system settings, connect both systems together via ethernet cable, make sure its not a crossover cable. I did this when i got my second ps3. its fairly easy, but takes a while to transfer.

or you can youtube it and get a step by step showing what to do, thats what i did.

I threw my fatboy on ebay as soon as it started sounding like a jet engine. Luckily I got over $300 for it, easily paid for the slim.

The data transfer was a life-saver, that thing came out a few days before I made the move.

Thanks for the ideas/suggestions. It ended up being simply a bad ethernet cable. But even with a better one, things still weren't running as great as I would like. So I upgraded my router considerably and that made a difference as well.
