Either I'm not at all understanding, or it's this.

I can't remember what the luxury tax was, I think it's more than a 1 for 1 basis this year, but I'm also about certain it's not more than 2 for 1, so a salary of $14.5mil in one season, I don't see how ONLY Lin's cost would be 3 times that amount.

I"m not necessarily disagreeing with you, but I'm sure when they waived him, they didn't think he was a guy who could average 18 and 8 or whatever he put up.

The rockets waived him because they never really gave him a shot to run the point in Houston when they had him. They had Lowery and Dragic so Lin never got a shot. Then they were overpaying Flynn 3m at the time who held the 3rd roster spot a pg, and they were not prepared to cut Flynn and swallow the 3m still owned to Flynn, hoping that he would somehow earn some of that 3m.
And now this year the Rockets dont have Lowery or Dragic, and since Lin has hype behind him now from New York, the Rockets can keep and maintain that cash flow from China and Asain Markets, that they obtained with Yao.

So at the time having very little sample size and 15 guaranteed contracts on the roster is why they cut Lin.

And I don't know what is up with Houston in the Howard deal, they truly believe that they can change his mind and want to stay in Houston and will not give up the money he can get with the Rockets in a tax free state. Also the Rockets need a star for their shared Network Channel with the Texans, that begins in 2 seasons.

They also believe that can clear enough cap space next season if he decides to stay to go after a top free agent of next years FA class.

What they probably meant is that his 3 years would cost $43 mil (instead of the listed value of $26 or whatever).

The Knicks are just in luxury tax hell. As an example, they signed Felton to 3 years, $10 mil, but it will cost them $18 mil over the life of the contract with the tax.

O.J. Mayo said on Monday that he will be signing with the Mavs.

Mayo joins a backcourt with Darren Collison, Roddy Beaubois, and Vince Carter

whats them waiving him have to do with this offer?

if he did what he did last season for Houston or the Knicks, anoffer still would have had to have been made

Good post shel. I think it's a good thing for the NBA. I know he Lamers have been able to benefit due to money, but I'm hoping it can help create more balance.

And if sources are correct in saying Howard would sign an extension, I'm more willing to hear/see if it actually happens.

this new 4 team trade proposal seems odd to me

Lakers get: Howard and Al Harrington
Magic get: Pau Gasol and Aaron Afflalo and picks and cash
76ers get: Andrew Bynum
Nuggets get: Andre Iguodala

if i was the Magic i think i'd prefer just having Bynum straight up for Howard than Gasol and Afflalo. Gasol is old and unless they plan on just dealing him elsewhere, i dont see why he'd help. the picks from the teams involved wouldn't be anything great (maybe mid teens from Nugg's or 76ers).

Marc Stein reporting Howard to Lakers pretty much a done deal.

If this goes through as reported, can we just contract the Magic as a team? If Bynum and Pau are traded, can I switch favorite teams?

76ers
Holiday
Nick Young/Evan Turner/Jason Richardson
Dorrel Wright
Spencer Hawes/Thaddeus Young/Moultrie (rookie)
Andrew Bynum

Lakers
Nash/Blake
Kobe
Artest/Jamison
Gasol
Howard

Magic
Jameer/Duhon
Redick/Afflalo
Turkoglu/Harrington
Davis/Ayon
Vucevic

Nuggets
Lawson/Miller
Iggy
Gallinari/Chandler
Faried
McGee/Koufos

so Gasol stays, Magic got Harkless, 3 1st rounders (all probably late 1sts), Vucevic, Afflalo, Al Harrington.

Nuggets look strong adding Iggy.

Magic gotta be looking to deal more of these guys and just tank for the 1st pick next year. not sure what they were thinking there. if they can move Harrington, Turkoglu (good luck) and Jameer and package those picks for better picks, they can rebuild with some young guys... but its gonna take a heck of a GM job to get all that done.

Yup. Magic trade the best player and get the worst deal.

Now, LA should sign Barbosa.

Lakers-Heat is gonna be fun.

only way the Lakers don't make finals is if Kobe decides he still needs 25 shots per game. there is a good chance the Lakers could make the finals without Kobe... if they could just get him to pull in the reigns and shoot 15-18 times per game and score 20-22 ppg they'd win it all. but Kobe will never let that happen.

they are fucking good tho

When you're the best, you shoot all you want.

Please please please please don't be soft Gasol. I beg you. Begging. Please.

But anyway, Howard isn't signing the extension. But can't see him leaving LA. Then again, god only knows with him.
