I can actually explain this pretty well. I am Hungarian so I've learned a lot from my family. Hungary has a shit ton of rivers and lakes. But not only that they have a bunch of thermal lakes. This allowed them to train year-round for water sports while a lot of other countries weren't. Granted heated pools and whatnot has evened out the playing field but the history has made it so these water sports are the popular ones. Add that it was a former communist country, it had a ton of infrastructure for this kind of thing.LetsGoPeay wrote:How and why does a country like Hungary become a world power in water polo?
I just caught a few minutes of men's field hockey. It instantly rocketed to spot #3 on my list of top 10 sports that men look gay playing behind only figure skating and synchronized swimming.

I love Volleyball indoor and outdoor and consider it the most under rated Olympic port but I don't understand the fake spike in indoor volleyball, it fools NOBODY.

Re: Olympics
lol its the olympics not the usa trials. the rule is there to give the competition a chance. the us benefits from this rule in other sports that they dont dominate in. they knew the rule going in, and she didnt perform good enough. sucks but she is far from the first and wont be the last.

This isn't a USA thing.
And the rule doesn't promote competition, it does the opposite.

Outside, it's not nearly as effective. Indoors, if done properly, it's awesome. It's probably going to be tough to explain, but I'll try... think option football.

A B C
So if A is the setter, B should be executing the fake. Generally speaking, B is jumping right as A is setting. A has the option to quick set to B, or normal set over B to C. The big deal is that the blockers are shading towards A and C in most cases and rarely focus on B. So if the quick set comes, it happens incredibly fast and is nearly impossible to stop. Blockers don't have time to elevate and the defense if frequently out of position and can't react.
When A jumps on a B set, it really doesn't make a lot of sense. You'll rarely, if ever, see a quick set in this split scenario.
If you watched the US v Brazil women today, it was a great matchup and this tactic was used very well throughout the game. Some funny shots of Kobe watching it as well. Wish he was mic'd up. From what I could see, it wasn't safe for TV, lol.

I'm sure his wife was cool with him taking in a women's volleyball game by himself after all the stuff about him partying and the photos that came out about it.

Re: Olympics
pretty sure every single sport, summer and winter, a country cant have all 3 medals, thats the point, i think. i know how speedskating works and many of the individual or small team sports are similiar. just makes it so its not 4 americans, a russian, and a chinese competing in a final...shel311 wrote:This isn't a USA thing.

Re: Olympics
Without the rule some sports wouldn't have a point. Archery would have 64 athletes and 30 of them would be Korean. Table Tennis would have 64 and 40 of them would be Chinese. It is done so that their is a spread of competitors from all nations. If you want to see the best athletes, go watch a World Championship; that is what those are for.cdub21 wrote:pretty sure every single sport, summer and winter, a country cant have all 3 medals, thats the point, i think. i know how speedskating works and many of the individual or small team sports are similiar. just makes it so its not 4 americans, a russian, and a chinese competing in a final...shel311 wrote:This isn't a USA thing.
