what's the catch? they're just going to let people rent and buy used and be able to access online features? "we listened," just doesn't make sense.

I believe it is going back to what it was originally and like all other games.
You buy a game, new or used, you play online for free.

Follow it. Either EA determined that new sales were down enough to warrant the change or they - or the consoles themselves - have some plan that would make their EA Pass useless so they might as well get ahead of the game and look like the white knights.
Re: No More Online Passes in EA games
there are more potential revenues from people buying game add on's than there are for buying the online passes, would be my guess.
so they are spiting themselves and keeping away potentially add on buyers by charging a 10 fee that might keep people away from borrowing/renting the game.

Why lose 10% of sales due to the pass when you can increase DLC by 10.1%?

The various ultimate team modes make up a huge revenue stream to them...and they are adding it to NCAA 14 this season.

You don't need to buy extra packs with real money, but many people do.

I think this is part of it. Also think their rep has taken huge hits recently (See SimCity), and they are trying to save face in the gaming community as a whole.buckeye76 wrote:Yep Dave I agree..DRiccio21 wrote:there are more potential revenues from people buying game add on's than there are for buying the online passes, would be my guess.

Fuckers should have to refund all of us that paid $10 to buy the online pass on their used games then.

Yup, this is exactly where it's going.
FIFA rakes from it and many MMOs have now flipped to this concept. In a 'have it now' society, they give you the option to earn the upgrades (sometimes) in game with a lot of work or just buy it for $10.
