2013 College Football Season
Re: 2013 College Football Season
man could you imagine the Canes offenses of the past 4 or 5 years trying to run the option?
hahaha... they couldn't even get the right amount of players on the field

Jacory would float the pitch and i bet that would even be picked off.
Re: 2013 College Football Season
I hate playing GT. it's a pain in the ass and usually results in having d-lineman dinged up thanks to cut blocks.
Re: 2013 College Football Season
GT is annoying as hell. It is very fun to watch them play your friends team and be successful. There has got to be no other offense more frustrating to be dominated by then GT.

It is funny timing coming out of the Seminoles and Hurricanes fans, huh?DRiccio21 wrote:man could you imagine the Canes offenses of the past 4 or 5 years trying to run the option?

I actually enjoy the offense. There most certainly is a chess match. The entire offense is based on your next immediate move. How can that not be a chess game.

Option attack is for pop warner and shitty high schools.

Talk shit about the option here and people look at you like a crazy person. Living in the past I suppose.

isn't that EXACTLY what chess is?
unless you're going to say there is no strategy at all and its the same repetition over and over regardless of opponent, i'd argue its very much like chess
Trendon - your silly little opinion with no substantiation has been noted. Next time point out why
Shel - samsies but at least you went with humor so i can accept that
Riccio - Though we'll prolly still disagree in the end at least you are questioning my statement logically with an intelligble retort.
Seriously no offense to any of you but how much football did you or have you played or coached? I'm NOT discrediting you or saying you dont know anything or that I know more than you based on experience...please dont take it that way.
What I am saying is that I have experience with playing, scouting, and coaching option and other styles
While option may be a LITTLE strategy at the player level....really just at the QB level....there is very very little coaching strategy....it is NOTHING like chess. Please give me examples of how so as I can give you examples of why its not
Option offense coaching.....the ONLY thing you are "setting up" ie...strategizing about it when to run an option pass....thats it....everything else is calling the play then having your qb read the defense and decide to give/keep, then give/keep...and on "really" complicated plays....give/keep one more time. Thats it.....As a coach you're not trying to set up the defense to think you're doing one thing then doing another. I'm talking going beyond your player reads but getting into one coach clearly besting another coach with playcalling schemes.
When I say strategy I'm talking multiple layers of formations, vs personel, vs tendencies. One coach setting up plays to have the defense / DC do something then take action based on what they do. Not just in game but in season...setting up plays in games knowing your opponent will scout then adding wrinkles here and there to break those tendancies you have gotten your oppnent to expect.
Have you ever seen or been a part of a practice for a team that runs option?? lemme tell ya how that goes....
repetition
repetition
repetition
repetition
repetition
repetition

You have your core (prolly less than 40) plays then you just practice your players doing each play vs different looks. Options offenses usually dont TRY to get mismatches or get people out of position in preplay....they go to the line...see what they got based on the play they are going to run then run it trying to execute.
watch an option offense more intently next time and see just how may audibles they call....how much communication is that qb doing pre-play..I'd be willing to wager it aint much
I'm not saying option offense isnt useful....I'm not saying its "bad".....I'm just saying it uses way less strategy than most and i find it boring....painfully boring to watch
and aj is 1,000% correct. you run that in little league because kids on defense dont have enough experience and arent old enough to be disciplined and coaches do it at shitty schools when they dont have personel to run anything else or the coach isnt bright enough to be able to really teach players schemes
but i realize...that may just be my opinion (though I;d again be willing to wager that it is the MAJORITY opinion by far..hence why we see so little of it)

Thats not strategy my friend....thats just reading the defense
im talking preplay, pregame, and during at the coaching level
for example...the qb isnt thinking...hey i'll give the ball to my fb this time to get the safety to come up in the middle so that i can then have my option work when going outside. that qb is simply coming to the line...reading whats there, snapping the ball then reading what he sees and making a decision
he's not calling a te motion to heavy 4 gap sprint 3 times during the 1st half of a game to bring the safeties up for a PA off of that or even a counter based on how they are seeing the dbs and lb's flow to the heavy side (as a simple example)

lol, thats exactly what i was trying NOT to do hence the "please dont take it this way"
But the basis for my evaluation (opinion) is based on my experience with the option
apologies if anyone takes it that way
but we're all dudes here....not like anyone is gonna read anything posted and be like "oh hai, thats a good point, i've changed my opinion"...
is what it is and thats my opinion

You gotta throw a "with all due respect" in there.
Re: 2013 College Football Season
Im sorry, but you are oversimplifying Georgia Tech's offense. They aren't your run of the mill high school or pee wee option offense. They do have wrinkles and run out of different formations. They are setting up plays for later in the game from the very first snap. They have counters, reverses, fly sweeps. They use everyone in the running game including the wr's and you never know who is going to carry the ball. On any given play you have to account for all of the skill positions. They don't just call option left, option right, option left, option right all game long. The coach is calling that fullback dive 8 - 10 times on those early drives getting your lb's and dl to commit to the middle before he busts you outside for the long run. He's running the power option 3 or 4 times then busting you with the counter underneath.
It is a chess match. He might not be playing chess against the other coach but he is playing it with the undisciplined players on the field. If you've coached you know that to defend the option your players need to play assignment football. The GT coaches are up in that booth watching the defenses lb's and safeties and how they are reacting on every play. When they start cheating and leaving their assignment, that's when they get them with the misdirection.
