The Model S P90D is the only car in the history of Car and Driver magazine's(I think it's that one, or maybe Motor Trend) 70 years of rating cars to get a perfect rating.

Yea you get to a point in the process where you start to configure and you can opt out at that point. Once you configure you can still get a refund if something comes up where you can't secure financing or don't want it and they have said they won't make the $1k binding to a certain degree. But no specific details on how that works it's just refundable if you change your mind at a certain point in the process.

All the eggs in the tax credit basket, not sure I feel comfortable enough after reading a few articles regarding their sales and the credit being full value by 2017

I was just reading the same thing a few minutes ago as well, that that could very well change 2-3 years from now when the car is finally ready.

Fwiw even at the half tax credit I think the car is still valuable and pretty fairly priced, just don't see myself being able to make the leap or commitment

Same here. I always drive wherever I go. I put close to 3k miles on my jeep in a week and a half. Always driving to Omaha and back to Colorado Springs (600ish miles). The car wouldn't be beneficial for me to pay on that and my Jeep as well. Although, the Jeep may be paid off this year and I am thinking of getting a Land Rover Discovery as my everyday vehicle.

The tax credit is nice and all but I was buying it regardless of that. For me it the long term benefits and the potential for this vehicle and tesla in the future is very intriguing to me.

Hell I'd love an S right now but I ain't balling like that!!

Also, they will be releasing a crossover Model 3 rumored to be called the Y.

Making their product line the S 3 X Y.

Make it happen Elon

This is all pretty crazy to me even as a person that is reserving one with how people are lining up all over the world for a car they havent seen, don't know when it will be delivered, and have no idea of what the unveiling will be like.

I am not getting this car until 2020 with how far back in the reservation process I will be for waiting to get online.

Yes but they also are probably thousands of spots ahead of me and will get their car next year possibly versus in 2018-19 like me which I am ok with due to my situation.

They will be shipping from west coast to east though so someone in NYC will get theirs after me regardless of when they ordered versus when I did.

Also, you can delay shipment of your car for up to 6 months as you choose the timeframe.

Shipping order:
Current owners of a Tesla car got early access
As well as employees
Then people who preordered in store west coast first, east coast last
Then people who ordered online west coast first, east coast last

Cars that have been spec'd to near top of the line will ship first versus base models.

There is a good possibility I get it but also will depend on tonight and my line in queue. They are already estimating 100k pre-orders today/tonight. Being that the only thing I expect to add is auto pilot and possibly an upgraded battery depending on cost, I may be way low in the queue versus the ones being maxed out who will ship first. Which means it may make sense for me to gamble maxing out a little more to make the shipment amount to ensure the tax credit. It's all a very big unknown right now.

They have sold 50k cars already.
Overseas cars do not count, only US.

Best explanation I have seen yet.
TL;DR: When you hit brand-specific 200,000 EV's sold, you get full $7500 Federal EV tax credits for both the entire quarter and the following quarter; subsequently, you'll get $3750 for two quarters; subsequent to that you'll get two quarters at $1875 tax credit to consumer for EV's bought. Finally there will be no credit at all. Below is an example where 200k US unit sold cap is hit in Quarter 2.

Time Quarter1 Q.2 Q.3 Q.4 Q.5 Q.6 Q.7 Q.8
Cumulative Tesla cars sold in US <200k >=200k ignored ignored ignored ignored ignored ignored
Federal tax credit amount $7500 $7500 $7500 $3750 $3750 $1875 $1875 $0
'Quarter' being a set of three months in the following set: { {Jan, Feb, Mar}, {April, May, June}, {July, Aug, Sept}, {Oct, Nov, Dec} }.
