Not a big BBQ sauce person per se but I do love me some BBQ and agree with that Texas assessment based on my short time here and I agree with them.
That being said, I agree with your #1 this time as Carolina BBQ normally includes mustard based if I am not mistaken and man do I love me some mustard.

*See #4.

I had to distinguish them because I think there's a noticeable difference between the 2.

I'm a BBQ sauce novice, but am the opposite of a Texan and believe some kind of sauce makes all things better. Currently the two I've been using at home are Bullseye Original and Texas styles

Re: Random Discussions
You want to step up your BBQ game. Just go with Cookies BBQ Sauce. Screw Tubbs, Kraft or that other shit. If you aren't making your own (mustard based is the best IMO) just find a bottle of Cookies (yellow label)DRWebs wrote:I'm a BBQ sauce novice, but am the opposite of a Texan and believe some kind of sauce makes all things better. Re: Random Discussions
My sauce preference depends on what I'm eating. Chicken vs. pulled pork vs. boston butt.
I've seen a lot of this Texas Ketchup stuff floating around now though that I really like. Guess it's a bbq sauce, but it's just...different. The Southerner in Nashville has one that I'll drive there just to buy. Texas Ketchup "Black Gold".

In texas? Go get some Rudy's BBQ sauce. Love the spicier one (something sissy or other)

Not a mustard fan at all so I'll need to find a new base if I ventured into making my own sauce

Re: Random Discussions
There isn't even a hint of mustard in the taste if made right. I have a great family recipe for a mustard based sauce. It took some prying to get out of my ole man but it is amazingDRWebs wrote:Not a mustard fan at all so I'll need to find a new base if I ventured into making my own sauce

Re: Random Discussions
Based on Reigns general descriptions I think I tend to gravitate most towards Kansas City or Memphis style

I love Alabama white bbq sauce on chicken... I think it is the absolute best.

Re: Random Discussions
I've spent a lot of time in North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee the last 2 months... about the best thing to come out of the trips was the BBQ!
I found a great recipe for Carolina BBQ (no mustard). I've made 2 large batches of pulled pork over the last 2-3 weeks. It's been great.

Re: Random Discussions
100% agree on the Carolina. Living there for a few years, best bar none. I'd go Memphis dry rub before any other sauce though. Otherwise, semi-sweet sauces seem mostly the same, probably put Texas on top of those though.ReignOnU wrote:New topic... regional BBQ sauce types... tried to keep it general and standard. Added some descriptions of the base (not all ingredients) if you haven't had them. If I'm missing anything obvious, toss it in there. Lots of arguments on BBQ sauce types, so if you think of it as something different, adjust your rankings accordingly. Texas is interesting, because many Texans argue that the best sauce is no sauce. If you need sauce then your BBQing wrong!
1.) Carolina - Vinegar & Spices
2.) Kansas City - Thicker, Hickory Smoked, Molasses & Tomato
3.) Tennessee - Molasses, Smoke, Worcestershire, Bourbon
4.) South Carolina - Carolina & Mustard, Brown Sugar
5.) Texas - Thin, Worchestershire, Ketchup and Vinegar, basic spices, sometimes w/heavy Chili or Cayenne
6.) Memphis - Tangy, Tomato based
7.) New Orleans - Butter, Garlic, Hot Sauce
8.) Alabama - Mayo & Vinegar
I'm guessing my rankings here might be as odd as my Banana Runts. I absolutely can't stand the smell of vinegar... I think vinegar chips are disgusting... but I love me some Carolina BBQ!

I like Sweet Baby Rays for chicken on the grill.
I like my steak plain, but A1 on my baked potato and skin of potato.
I love the restaurant, Old Carolina.
There is a place in Columbus called City BBQ. Very good food.
Here is what they say...You’ll certainly catch hints of Texas, Kansas City, North Carolina, and Memphis in our ‘que.
