Re: 2048 Season Thread: White Men Can Jump??!
So question. I try and make guys play a bunch of positions, I traded for Eugene Green b/c he had all the tools to be a decent 3B even though he was an OF... Solid infield range, arm, and error ratings. So I put him at 3B forced and while I expected him to suck, he didn't get even a 1 or 2 rating at 3B which I thought was odd for 37 games played.
Just noticed he is left handed... are lefties not allowed to play IF outside of 1B?

You never see a lefty play 3B due do the angle throwing to 1B.

Haha, think about it. Every ball you field you then have to turn your body to set your feet up for the throw and every tenth of a second is precious.
Re: 2048 Season Thread: White Men Can Jump??!
turning your body to throw just wastes time.
Re: 2048 Season Thread: White Men Can Jump??!
How does fielding a ball to the left if you're a righty not end in setting you feet to throw, same goes for a lefty fielding a ball down the 3B line?wdoupis wrote:Haha, think about it. Think about a 3B going a couple of steps toward the line to get a ball. A righty can just stop and throw flat footed over to 1B. A lefty has no chance of doing that. He has to stop and move his body basically almost 180 to get into a position to throw the ball, which probably would take almost a full second extra.dusters06 wrote:How does fielding a ball to the left if you're a righty not end in setting you feet to throw, same goes for a lefty fielding a ball down the 3B line?wdoupis wrote:Haha, think about it. And that's just a 3B, imagine how many times a SS has to go to his right, same with a 2B.

Are we really explaining this to people? WTF?

My point was for each side you have to turn a 180, there's a side you can simply plant and throwshel311 wrote:Think about a 3B going a couple of steps toward the line to get a ball. Re: 2048 Season Thread: White Men Can Jump??!
If you properly field a ground ball using the rounding technique (for routine ground balls), right handed throwers have the advantage because you are putting yourself into position before you actually catch the ball.
Left handers would not be able to field the ball moving in the direction towards 1st base to set themselves up prior to actually catching the ball.
This video is not perfect, but he shows you the rounded technique.
We teach it to all of our kids and it was taught to me many years ago for fielding routine ground balls.

so you have an advantage being a righty but not impossible for a lefty to be there.... He should still have a rating at 3B.

Nothing is impossible, but it is definitely not common at all for lefties.
Most lefties are pitchers, catchers, 1B or outfield.

Name the last MLB catcher that was left handed thrower.The_Niddler wrote:Nothing is impossible, but it is definitely not common at all for lefties.

Lefties don't play 3B, SS, 2B or catcher. The percentage of batters that are right handed make lefties at catcher a liability. The percentage of plays to 2B and 1B also make lefties a liability anywhere other than 1B.

You are correct, it is uncommon to play Catcher too.
We just happen to have a kid that plays there and is pretty good at it, so I wasn't thinking.
But I agree with you, it is definitely not common and in thinking about it, he has to field throws backhanded and it would make sweeping tags in front of the plate damn near impossible.

No MLB team has used a left-handed catcher since the Pittsburgh Pirates put Benny Distefano behind the plate in 1989

every millisecond counts in the MLB. that exrta turn of the body by a lefty to throw to 1st could be the diff between out n safe
