Formerly I would watch more college hoops than NBA so the disparity might not have been as bad but now its been switched and its tough to get through.

This 1000% ever since the thunder have been in okc i have not been able to watch college ball. Watching the nba more closely has just ruined it. Its soooo slow.

Virginia is solely responsible for the death of college basketball.

the way they move defensively is like an orgasm to my eyes. every hedge or double is covered by a rotating help defender filling space. its just relentless. they attack the ball any time a dude goes into the paint too without getting many fouls called which is incredible. the amount of deflections and tipped balls was wild. then on offense every possession is just methodical til either they get an open look or clock is down to 2 and they take whatever they can get.

the discipline it takes to run shit like that is so impressive, especially considering he's coaching dudes from AAU era of basketball.

problem with that system is that if they get into foul trouble in the tourney and other team is getting free throws or they go cold or run into a hot team they have such a tiny margin for error. hard to run thru a tournament style without a one off event like that happening. but for now, they have like the best defensive efficiency in about 20 years i think i read... enjoy it!

Dad life gets out of the house for once and he could have easily slept at home with the baby on his chest versus sleeping courtside and watching UVA basketball. :P

Sounds like you had a highly defensive focused basketball coach in HS Dave.

I'm pretty sure mine thought he was Nolan Richardson Jr. Our offense consisted of 4 plays of basic motion. Otherwise, it was streetball/fastbreak.

We spent almost all of our time on defense. A lot of pressing with 1-3-1, 2-2-1 and 1-2-1-1, as well as man. We'd drop to 2-3 or just play man occasionally in the half court set or out of in-bounds, but otherwise, the pedal was to the floor.

We were a good team, but we got exposed by great teams. 9 out of 12 of us were football players and it was pretty obvious when we got to the basketball court.

Apparently that first round of FBI stuff and everyone getting in trouble was just the appetizer:

“When this all comes out, Hall of Fame coaches should be scared, lottery picks won’t be eligible to play and almost half of the 16 teams the NCAA showed on its initial NCAA tournament show this weekend should worry about their appearance being vacated.”

we ran almost the exact defense that UVA runs. We'd have practices at least once a week without basketballs or where the 1st group wouldn't ever play offense. we just slid and worked on spacing and helping and where to be on traps, etc. we played in the inner city league and every team scored in the 90's and we'd score in the high 40's typically. our d was called 'shadow'. it was like a Temple matchup zone where it had man principles but there was always a guy behind in help position and the other guys sliding accordingly. how a bunch of 16-17 year olds ran it i have no idea. i think i scored about 12 ppg my senior year and the other co captain scored 16... we basically were the only offense. we just ran flex and some versions of horns with back cutting principles offensively. if a team played zone we literally just waited for the shot clock to go to 5 and then prayed. we made the final 4 my junior and senior year. but just like UVA, any time a team was hot against us we were fucked.

That's pretty cool. Love it when teams do stuff like that. That relates a lot to football for me. I've talked about HS a lot before (Hi Pat) and all of that success really started at the lower levels.

In HS the offense ran (and is now doing it again) a modified version of Mouse Davis' Run and Shoot. The running game setup resembles what you see from Ga. Tech, with more cutting inside handoffs and cross-action and the passing game looks a lot like the Houston Oilers. WRs are expected to make reads at the LOS. I used to try to replicate with Air Force's playbook in NCAA. The offensive fundamentals start in pee wee ball. They run a standard wishbone. All of the run calls at that level emulate short motion out of a standard flexbone (also the base setup of a run and shoot). As they get into Jr. High, they convert to the flexbone formation with 2 WRs and 2 slots. This is where they start adding in long/short motion and cutting action. Then at HS, you work in the WRs, screens, and other advanced stuff.

Defense will be near and dear to your heart Dave. We ran what was basically the early 90s LeBeau 3-4 Zone Blitz. We had the T-N-T up front (Tackle, Nose, Tackle), who were taught how to essentially hold the line and control the trench. Then Thunder-Lightning played were the 2 inside backers. Thunder being weak side, majority of run responsibility and Lightning strong-side, often with TE or hook responsibility. The usual Sam and Will, designating Will as "blood technique." Basically imagine Alvin Mack from The Program... his job was the kill the QB. We'd have all of the standard blitz calls (Strike, Whip, Thunder, Lightning, Crack Left/Right, Fire). Then we added in all of the stunts and slants on the DL, we'd stem the LBs into the line and did a lot of stack and tap blitzing (basically LB lines up right behind DL and taps him on the hip for blitz direction).

I loved playing football and being involved in those 2 systems was a huge part of that.
