Stupid Richmond.

Miggy's quest for 40/40 was thwarted by being thrown out 4 times in the series against the Greeks.

100% AGREE! I'd be leading the division if we could play up to our Pythag.
Only if I also agreed to play down to mine...

I believe the AL East is 57 games over .500.

I doubt any other division comes very close.

without writing a book, how would you go about comparing then?

It's just random that you're affirming that whatever the head-to-head of teams at the same position in different divisions is confirms whether one division is ahead of the other.

The better comparison would likely be to show the actual record of one division against the other division, not just pairing off teams based on standings.

If you add up the records vs the other division, the picture is more complete. As a possible example - a 3rd place AL East team may be 4-2 against the 3rd place AL West team, but 5-19 against the other AL West teams. Vice versa, that 3rd place AL West team may be above 0.500 against the AL East overall, but just 2-4 against the 3rd place team.

The way you tabulate it that is a Win for the AL East, but it would be misleading. It also limits the sample size when you do it your way: fewer games = more chance for results that don't truly indicate overall relative ranking.

The best comparison is to add up the total records for each division.

We play teams in other divisions at a sample size equal to one playoff series - meaning it's somewhat meaningless.

For example, I think Winterfell is "5-0" against the AL East using Nick's accounting. And Winterfell thinks that means nothing because anyone can be above 0.500 against anyone in a 6-7 game sample set.

well every division faces their own division the same amount and would equal to .500 since everyone has to win and lose the game.. so our like, +50 on every other division would lead me to believe that we dominate everyone.

+50 what? The AL East has 20 more total wins than the AL Central... 30 more than the AL West. 7 more than the NL West.

Head to head the East is 14 games better than the Central. Boston provides 10 of those 14 differential wins.

Maybe more to you're liking - your AL Beast is 13 games under 0.500 against the Top 3 in the Central.

And, the Top 3 in the East are 6 games under 0.500 against the top 3 in the Central.

So, maybe not AL Beast. Maybe Boston Beast (well, we know this isn't a "maybe").

In general, I think you've been lead to believe wrong.
