The new, new trade details.

A reverse protection and a pick deferment, I've never heard of either.
The Pelicans receive these picks from Lakers for AD:

- 2019 unprotected
- 2021 protected (or if it's pick 8-30, it'll be unprotected in 2022)
- 2023 right to swap
- 2024 unprotected with right to defer to 2025

Lakers got raped here IMO. Is there a guarantee that AD will sign with them after next year? How much money does the Lakers have to pick up another piece to help out AD?

Lakers still have a max slot to offer. Pels did great to get these picks post Lebron as the chance they are worth way more goes up. I am sure AD resigns as he has been pushing for Lakers trade all along

But was it the Lakers or Lebron the reason he was pushing the trade? If they don't get anyone else to come to the Lakers or they do and injuries happen and they miss the playoffs again, does he sign?

you definitely trade for a top 5 NBA talent whenever theyre available. See: Toronto.

Rob Pelinka? I think his name is.. the GM of LA.. could be fired tomorrow with how oddly run that organization is. but in general, we think as fans cause were forever committed to our team, but these dudes can lose their jobs. Why not go after a monster and give up a pick 5 yrs from now? Youre probably gone by then anyways.

Ball/Ingram/Hart wont win you a title. Davis can. NBA is a superstar driven league and most champs have 2 superstars on their squad min when they win. Lakers now have 2.

I’m not a cap expert but from what I read the Lakers don’t have room for another max. No idea tho

They almost have enough for a max slot.

One big detail reported today was when the trade would be official. It's basically earlier than expected, and not to get into all the details, but by it being executed sooner on July 6th, the Pels will get an extra $4mil in cap space, and the Lakers will get $4mil less. Kind of big as the Lakers don't quite have enough for a max slot, but they still have a decent amount of money. That being said, they need to fill out an entire roster, so they have work to do.

It had to do with a trade kicker or something like that that AD had. If the deal was finalized later, the Pels would pay the kicker, which counts toward the cap. It was reported that the deal will be done sooner, so the Lakers pay it and not the Pels.

I think that means the Lakers have $28mil instead of $32mil.

Not true it seems as they are going hard after Kemba and Kawhi.

I assume they can only get one though.

Trying to understand NBA financials and that pick stuff is like George trying to understand OOTP financials.

Both teams did well imo. The guys the Lakers gave up are solid but not roster changing. Then you have all kinds of what ifs on the picks, draft class depths, where they end up being, and exactly what Zion becomes to pair with.

It's the best the Pels could do it seems as Boston refused to deal Tatum and Beal wasn't happening it seems so they went average players and draft depth.

We won't know for many years is my guess on how this trade faired in the long run.

From ESPN article:
For now, the expectation is that the deal will be completed on July 6, the end of the free-agent moratorium, league sources told Wojnarowski and Bobby Marks. Assuming that Davis continues with his plan to accept his 15 percent trade bonus of $4 million, the Lakers will have $23.7 million in available salary cap space for free agency. Davis has the right to void the bonus.
and
If the Pelicans and Lakers had waited until July 30 to complete the trade, the Lakers could've had $32.5 million in cap space -- enough to pursue a max-contract-level free agent. By waiting until July 30, Los Angeles would've been acting like a team over the cap and thus would be allowed to use the fourth overall pick in Thursday's draft as salary. If the trade is finalized on July 6, that number shrinks to $27.7 million -- a number lowered to $23.7 million with Davis' trade kicker.
There's zero incentive for NOLA to agree to have the trade go through on 7/30 instead. There's also zero incentive for Davis to give up $4 million if he only plans to stay 1 year anyway (or so it's been said).

$23.7 mil and you have to actually sign enough players to have a team to play each night, seems unlikely they can get a max guy.

They make it sound like NOP could be open to moving the date back but I could only imagine they would have to be compensated for that.

It hasn’t been said he intends to only stay 1 year. It’s been reported he won’t resign now and will do so after season so he can maximize his extension. Obviously if it’s a shit show he could leave but in all likelihood it’s a done deal he’s back in LA

As for New Orleans, the only incentive they have is they want the 4 pick to be playing in summer league with the team. More than likely they agree to additional compensation to move the date from what I’ve read
