I am just as boring.ReignOnU wrote: ↑Fri Jun 26, 2020 12:33 am I'm about as boring as it gets...
- I don't collect stuff. Still have my cards and a bunch of magazines from my youth. Cards aren't worth what they are printed on now. Some of the magazines are pretty fun to look at (Ken Griffey's rookie run, Pete Rose gambling, Tony Mandrich "The Incredible Bulk" and "Incredible Bust," and tons of Bulls and Orlando Magic stuff.
- TBH, I'm absurdly cheap, unless it's something that I absolutely want. Cars, sports, video games or buying sports related stuff for my kids... I'll typically overlook prices and target quality.
- I have a couple mixed drinks every month or so. Has to taste good. I don't drink to get drunk. If I'm wasting calories, it better be worth it.
- Never smoked a cigarette, cigar or pipe. Grew up with both parents as smokers and hated it. Kept my bedroom door closed and Febreeze handy.
- Don't smoke weed. Had nearly unlimited access to it growing up. Full access to a garage that always had at least a garbage bag of it. Yes, garbage bag. Th family of my father's closest friend were some of the biggest producers in the region. (still are today)
- Haven't had a dip/chew in almost 20yrs.
When it comes to vices and such, it's all adrenaline / gambling. I used to race everywhere I could. Track, strip, street, highway... didn't matter. Outside of screwing around a bit in my truck, 3-5 times, I haven't done any of that since I had my G8 5+ yrs ago. Gambling is the same. Haven't been to a casino in just over 2 years. Played a little online poker last summer and prior to that it had been since the shutdown. Haven't played in a casino since '15ish. Haven't put serious effort into DFS since '15-'16.
A lot of this all goes back to my upbringing. Lower income, always in trouble, father was more concerned with alcohol/weed and his friends, than his family, and I worked from 12yrs old on for anything that I wanted. Mom couldn't afford name brand stuff, so I got whatever the coolest thing at Family Dollar/Kmart was. Didn't get my first pair of Nike's until I got the team basketball shoes in HS and I know my mom worked her ass off at 2 jobs to make that happen. Meanwhile, I knew how much my dad made and how much he pissed away at the bar and the liquor store. So having 2 kids now, I fully intend to give them everything that I wish I had. They won't be spoiled and overwhelmed with non-sense/excess, but I'll do what's necessary to support their interests (my daughter is going into her 4th year of USJO gymnastics training... I've got a damn bar in my living room about 5' from her piano).
I don't collect anything currently. I have my cards and such from when I was a kid, so I have them from the 70's on up. Probably 20,000 cards or so. I have quite a few complete sets, etc. I was going to sell them off about 10 years ago, but didn't. Will see if my son or daughter is into them eventually.
I drink, but not on a purposed regular. When I go to my parents house, they live like 5 houses from me, we always have a beer or two.
On the weekends, we have a fire pit at their house and have some drinks, but again, just a few, nothing to get drunk.
It has been quite a while since I have been really drunk.
I used to collect cigars. I have a humidor that holds 200. I have about 100 currently in there. I haven't smoked one since Father's day last year.
I do not smoke weed and grew up with unlimited access also. Not a garbage bag full, that is crazy, but my uncle always grew it when I was a teenager and my other uncle grows it now, I just have no desire. I tried it twice in college and not being a smoker, I didn't inhale right and really got nothing out of it, so I never did it again.
I have had edibles. My wife made me brownies for a camping trip before. That was fun, but I honestly get the same feeling from smoking a good cigar, it just doesn't last as long from a cigar.
I tried cigarettes and dip/chew one time each and hated it so I never did them again.
I also grew up in a lower income family. My sister and I shared a bedroom till my sophomore year of college and then we had 2 bedrooms added on to our very small house I grew up in. My dad used to have a good job in the mill and then he lost his job and did excavating as a career as he was always a heavy equipment operator.
We grew up here near Steubenville though, so not a very populated area, so he made enough to help pay the bills, but that was about it.
As far as my own kids, we are very much like you.
I want to give them everything that I can, but they are not spoiled. We make my son (7) do chores and make money and he buys some of his own little toys that he wants to teach him money and such.
So that is why I play OOTP and Madden and a couple other video games. That is about all I do.
I love being a dad though and play with them and such as much as I can.
