They explain in the article that you're actually on the ground with a remote laptop terminal and you're controlling the gun in the AC-130. The plane can be shot down with lock on missiles, but the plane also has flares, which apparently allow you to dodge one missile.

You physically are still on the ground when you're controlling the AC-130 gun, though, so someone can come up and kill you, resulting the AC-130 going back to autopilot and you needing to respawn. No word on whether you can continue controlling the gun or if it just does the auto-pilot thing like the heli in MW1.
