So guys...
My internet has been a thorn in my side for far tooooo long. In previous years it's been up and down, but most recently the shit I'm dealing with is unbearable. Smooth sailing connections, then a hiccup, BOOM I get kicked off. Like fucking clockwork.
This weekend I'm moving...Moving to a new place in the city and have signed up for Comcast's best service (Only major players here are Comcast and AT&T). I believe it's like 16 mps and I asked if this would be good for gaming and they told me yes.
With that being said, I want to go the extra mile this time to ensure I will have the best connection on the block. I need help in this arena so if you can offer any advice I would greatly appreciate it.
I'm thinking about buying a cable modem for my room so I can have my own hardline. Any good brands? Things I should look for?
Maybe just sticking to a regular Wireless router is the way to go?
Help Please!

Re: HELP!! - VTrunNgun Needs NEW INTERNET!!
id just go with a linksys middle to top of the line router
they'll are work great if they are the models above $60
the ones below that work fine now...and worked well back in 2004-2006 bu tthey went through a 2 year period where linksys cheaped out, gutted the processor and they had issues.
all good now.
i was prolly one of the last to go wireless as i believed i could get a "better" connection going hardwire....i dont think i notice a difference
then again though...i went 5-7 last season wirelessly

Don’t forget that cable is a shared resource. So, that 16 megs is nice but don’t expect it all the time. I see fluctuations from 5 to 20 on my 16meg connection all the time. However, you wont notice the differences as much on football as in shooter games.

Ok from what I learned from trial and error.. And other Sources
Wired is always better then wireless, for the reason that a wireless connection can be interrupted, blocked, distorted causeing problems.
Also it is always better to have your router, seperate from your modem.. So dont purchase the 2 in 1 modem/ routers. For 1. if one part of it is to go out, the modem or the router you are screwed, you have to replace the whole thing unless under warrenty which is always a pain in the ass to go through.
Also I not a big believer in linksy just yet while others swear by them though. They are owned by cisco, but they treat them like a red headed step child at times, and their routers and modems have been known to just be lemons.
But as stated basically in router at or about 60$ or more is plenty good enough. In terms of modems I recommend the cable Motorala modems, they work very well and resonably price and dont get as hot as some other brand modems, which causes problems with connections and speed.
With that said Comcast gives motorolas as their modems for rent but those are cheap low end ones, buy one that you own and save 3$ dollors a month.
Lastly set your modem and router in a cool place,, keeping the temperture down around the equipment of course keeps the devices less like to overheating which is never good.
P.S.. Deciding between at&t dsl and comcast is not a choice, their should be no thought to it.. Comcast is the clear choice, is the only choice..

I'm not sure if you have this, but if you have the cable line hooked into a surge protector it will mess with your signal. I had mine hooked up that way for protection and I had constant hick ups. I imagine it would be the same way with the phone lines hooked in there. The cable company actually came out, saw that the cable ran from the wall into the surge protector, and then from the surge protector to the modem and spotted the issue right away. Hooked the cable straight to the modem and I have not had a problem since.
