New Madden feature tackles difficulty issues
by Joe Dodson

Buzz up!

If you aren't literate in all things football, calling plays in a Madden football game is a little like reading hieroglyphics. There are arrows, X's, and O's, but if you aren't a coach yourself or a hardcore football fan, they're all just questions marks.

And that's a real problem. While the Madden series annually leads the pack with strong sales, it's also notorious for being somewhat impenetrable to casual players. The folks at EA tried to address that last year with the downloadable Madden NFL Arcade, but it proved too pricey for its shallow gameplay and earned only mediocre reviews.

Maybe then you can join football Mensa.
Fortunately, a new feature in the upcoming Madden NFL 11 may finally have the answer. It's called Gameflow, and it hopes to make this year's Madden the most accessible version of the venerable football franchise yet.

Gameflow is basically a virtual offensive or defensive coordinator that both calls plays and walks you through them. Not only will you get on-field diagrams, you'll also receive verbal instructions from your coordinator. This way, Madden NFL 11 will actually teach you to play the game as you go, rather than forcing you to spend hours in the Tutorial.

As Madden Creative Director Ian Cummings recently told Gamespot, Gameflow was the fruit of a telemetric study of online Madden matches.

"Hundreds of millions of games of Madden were played this year alone, and we can find out that there are a lot of key nuggets in there," he said.

Two of those nuggets were that each game of Madden was taking too long, and that players were only using a fraction of their playbooks.

"There's 350 plays that we've put in every team's playbook pretty much, and they're only calling 15 of them and so, we gotta step back and say 'Wow, that's a major problem,'" Cummings told Gamespot.

Gameflow is intended to address both of these issues. Since the feature will call all your plays for you, you won't waste time staring slack-jawed at an endless list of shotgun formations and special teams options. Instead, the game will simply pick a good option for your current situation. From there, Gameflow will actually introduce you to the called play and explain how it works. Once you've run the play, you can then rate it from one to five stars. Based on that rating, Gameflow will either call the play more or less in the future.

Playing your way to a better understanding of football? Sounds like a good call to us.

The only way that would be cool, is it tought you about how to read the defense (if the end dives in, fake the handoff, if the safety blitzes, pass down the middle). That kinda stuff would be kinda cool. But I am sure its not going to be that so itll definately suck.

EA is just following the industry with this move. The gaming industry is huge right now. There is a ton of money out there to be made. The hardcore gamers will always be there but to expand sales, companies try to make the experience for the average Joe more enjoyable.

Games, especially online ones, can be very intimidating to the average person. They go online and have no idea what they are doing and end up quitting due to frustration. This is EA’s attempt to reach that fanbase making it easier for them to play.

Online shooters do it all the time by having noob weapons unlockable early. It’s much easier to shoot a rocket in the vicinity of the bad guys than to aim and shoot a gun. The average person gets some kills and hopefully stick with the game.

I’d expect you will see more of this dumbing down of things into the future.

The reason there are so few players used is cuz cock sucking lobby players pick there 2 or 3 favorite plays and exploit the piss out of them. For 2 reasons 1) they really dont know football, or 2) they will do anything to win a game

My thoughts exactly. Hell, if you watch the Madden tournaments they have you see the guys running that same play BS.

The Madden Tournament is embarrassing to watch. The gameplay is total garbage and the people in the finals are almost always complete fucking idiots. If anything, the tournament shows that the game is nothing like real football.

Then why am I clearly better at it than most everyone I've seen? As much as you might want to bag on me, I am a fucking surgeon with that thing.

You have clearly perfected noob tubing. I will give you credit for having some skill with the thing.

However, my initial point stands. If you are brand new to the game. It's much easier to shoot a tube in the direction of your opponent and kill them with the splash than it is to actually shoot them.

Rockets

Positives: Kills on contact and injures or kills anyone nearby.
Negatives: one shot, lengthy prep time both before and after shooting, poor aiming mechanism, can kill self, extremely loud, must be stationary, no other sidearm, horrible for CQC

Sniper

Positives: Often kills on contact, moderate ammo, can fire on move (albeit, not as effectively), allows for sidearm, can be silenced, best aiming mechanisms.
Negatives: Reload/recoil varies from horrible to good, can be very loud, poor for CQC

Automatic Weapons

Positives: Everything
Negatives: Power ranges from average to excellent. That's it.

I mean really. I know you'll come back and say NOOB TUBE NOOB TUBE (and you got the wrong terminology for the device anyway) but what the fuck is the big deal? It's one difference is it explodes and sometimes takes friends for the ride. That's its one benefit

Once again, it is my anti-sniper utility. You know you can't fucking hide in a building with me around. I am silly at whipping around a corner and letting one loose. I can't wait until I get my Ps3 back

i do agree with hoos statement above. Im a below average gamer at best. Shooter games are sweet, but easy to get frusterated and just plain quit.

The fact that I can provoke a ½ page response out of you by merely mentioning the noob tube speaks volumes. The guilt of using that noobish weapon must be eating you up.

While noob tubes arent hard to use, they are GREAT for weeding out camping, thermal sight using snipers and also effective in headquarters and occasionally demolition.

I understand it doesnt take any "skill" but it has its uses.
