Auburn as 2004 National Champs??
highly doubtful to happen but made for decent radio listening in my 6 hours of driving today
Southern Cal will probably have to vacate 2004 National Championship
In that case...who gets the title? Oklahoma who lost to USC (by 30 or so), or auburn who finished undefeated
imo, cases can be made obviously for both but tide fans (never had anything against bama at all) are realllllly turning me off with their anti-auburn "cases"
i havent made up my mind yet...i kinda think it should stand as "vacated" but thats not fair for the other schools
meh, need more time

USC won the title, plain and simple.
But if they technically have there title vacated, then no one deserves it.
And if we have to pick someone, IMO, it has to be OU because they were ranked ahead of Auburn. You can't "count" there loss to USC, because if you do, you're right back where you started, with USC deserving it.

Im pretty sure no one gets it. I thought I read that vacated wins and by extension titles are not credited to the losing team.

Only one group is considering giving it to someone else. The is the Football Writers Association of America is on record as saying if they are going to give it to anyone it will be Auburn. The other groups will just vacate the title.

Fuck that trophy. Auburn can have it
Re: Auburn as 2004 National Champs??
If I was a fan of any team who had this title "given" to them, I really wouldn't even want it. I wouldn't acknowledge that they even had it. Absolutely dumb. Just let USC keep it or take it away all together.

Why wouldn't you want the title? This isn't some bum off the street who made up his own system and retroactively hands out his national title. The FWAA has been giving national titles after each season for about 60 years. They are as legitimate as the AP or the Coaches poll, just don't have the name recognition or prestige for whatever reason. I guarantee you no school in Auburn's position would turn this down or not claim it. If they were going to give it to Oklahoma, I would be fine with that as well. I think it would be dumb for there not to be a national champion at all.

I think Auburn should get it, because they were the best team that year in my opinion. They didn't get to play USC, so we'll never know. However, that Auburn team was beast.

Re: Auburn as 2004 National Champs??
Just would never feel the same and would always feel tainted. I would want to win and earn a title, not be given it at the expense of some program cheating.autiger730 wrote:Why wouldn't you want the title? Re: Auburn as 2004 National Champs??
Auburn people are pretty torn about this. Split 50/50 pretty much. Either they say basically "yes, claim it it would be legit" or "don't claim it because that makes us like Bama".
This is a post from an Auburn man on another site that has made the most sense IMO:
"I have to disagree with you guys on this. This is actually a reputable organization that is recognized by the NCAA. Yeah, I don’t want to be like Alabama either, but this is not like them. All of the titles that they claim, which we don’t are before the 1950s.
This is pretty damn legitimate if it happens. The latent functions in this would be endless: It would make the BCS look like crap. Auburn would be the top story on ESPN for a few days. It would once again call for a need in a playoff system. Tuberville could put one under his belt for his career at Texas Tech. Since Chizik was a part of that season it would make him even look that much better. It would help recruiting and give Auburn more momentum in the state.
Yeah Alabama fans would discredit it, but that is what they do anyway. No matter what Auburn does, accepts or not accepts it, Alabama fans would get a laugh. I really don’t care I learned when I was 6 that no matter what I said or did, Alabama fans would never give Auburn any kind of credit.
The team deserved it, the coaches deserved it, and the fans have deserved it for over 60 years. If the media gets this right in the coming weeks, we should accept their apology and be proud. We should claim and celebrate this, is it so bad to finally be recognized? Let’s make one of the four organizations feel good about making this right. Either way not accepting it would be an insult to that organization and other organizations would see that…… and in the long run it would not be the classy or smart move for Auburn."

IMO if anyone should get it, it should be Auburn. And you're right, Alabama fans would discredit it. Because Auburn fans have done this to Bama for many years about our National Championships.......That's just how it works little brother. /pats autiger on head
Re: Auburn as 2004 National Champs??
41 is the only one I wish we wouldnt claim, outside that AU fans let the facts get in the way of what we "claim". Facts are if the BCS sticks around for another 20-30 years the folks then will ignore NC's won prior to the BCS the way folks try and ignore NC's won prior to AP polls.
I really dont care to be honest, I do feel most alabama fans would get a chuckle since the way AU fans love to "discredit" titles before 1950.

LOL, he posted something respectful and insightful from his perspective, I had a retort. it happens.

Re: Auburn as 2004 National Champs??
Claim it or not, what does it matter? I really do not see how this helps recruiting? These kids do not know what happened two years ago, much less six.
You have an undefeated season and an SEC Champ banner flying at your stadium. The SEC Champ. game is the defacto title game anyway.
