Network Setup, Lag and Video Games

Post by cougnix »

So I have a question. Many of us have complained about lag on games, me probably more than others. I know that for sure a week or two ago playing with Bama and AJ, I was suffering some major lag. Checked speedtest on the computer and it was pulling 11 mbps download and I didn't even wait for it to check upload. I reset the router, modem and system and checked after and it was at around 36 mbps download and around 11 upload. Are those good numbers? It's what I pay for, called Comcast Sunday to verify. You know they advertise up to 50 mbps, but you never get what they say is the max.

Last night I was playing and watched a few more kill cams than I usually do. probably 7 times out of 10 I took shots at the guy that killed me, but the kill cam show me dying before my gun is up and shooting. Not even a ground shot or anything. Does anyone have any tips on how to reduce the lag on a home network?

Are these issues: Kids on Xbox using wireless. Cell phones on Wifi on the network. iMac on wireless. PS4 is hard wired to the network, not using wifi.

lol, that is awful.

I avg 25-40 down and 5-15 up

But yes Coug, If they arent using the WIFI make them turn it off. So you get the most out of the connection. Even when you are hardwired they can drain some of your bandwidth by just being connected to the WIFI even though they arent using it.

I am able to stream and play online without noticable lag (i just suck)...

I pay $100 a month for this "upgraded" service. 3 years ago I wasn't even able to play online, so this a major step up for me.

Just imagine when you get to Buffalo!

I guarantee you will see a difference and you won't be 5-20 in domination with the most caps

Get a dual band router and a DOC3 modem. Update router firmware, good to go. I have the same plan, 50 down/15 up. Got a good ($120) netgear dual band and Motorola DOC3 modem, never have any issues. Have 2 phones, iPad, iPos touch, xbox 360 and a ps3 and 2 laptops on wifi, have a PS3 and xbox 360 hard wired along with directv DECA box and my LG tv and desktop PC hardwired. When all devices are lit up and humming, I still have no lag issues at all.

Sometimes its just a matter of updating yo shizzzz

Enfield Green, from the west end, right next to the airport... Not a bad area actually.

It doesn't matter if devices are on wifi or hardwired, if they are actively doing something online, they are eating away at your bandwidth.

With that said, I pay $29 a month for 18 MB down and 3 MB up and unless my wife is upstairs streaming an Amazon Instant Video, I do not experience any issues.

Or....

You could get another line of service at your home and just dedicate it to gaming only.

Or....

You could move to Kansas City or Salt Lake City or Austin and get google fiber for $70 a month for 1 Gbps down/1 Gbps up.

My wife's best friend's sister lives in Kansas City and she text us a pic of her speed test....
It was 943 MB down and 943 MB up! Ridiculous speeds.
Again, I am at 18 MB down and 3 MB up. :D

You can also use port forwarding for just the ps4 so the other systems speed is lessened
